As new teachers, we can use some routines of opening and closing a classroom. It
aims for managing the classroom, creating community, and checking our students’
understanding. Opening and closing routines have an important role in creating such an
engaging, meaningful, and enjoyable learning process. In opening routines, new teachers can
do some activities to try to get the students' attention before starting the lesson. As usual, the
teachers can start the lesson with an introduction and greetings or asking the students'
condition. Frequently, the new teachers are confused when they want to open the class. There
are some expressions of introduction and greetings that can be used by new teachers such as
"I’m your new English teacher”, “My name is ...”, “Good morning, students”, etc. Ask some
questions probably about their feelings at that moment, current famous issues, or even their
activity before going to school also the best ways try to encourage them to share their
thoughts. Besides that, to further focus the students' attention so that they are more
enthusiastic about participating in lessons, the new teachers can do kind of reading minute
activity. In the reading minute activity, the new teachers would find a story, poem, news, or
article from all genre online or book and read it front of the class. After they have modeled
this activity for a month, they can ask their students to do the same as they did. Checking
students attandence also importance for teacher after doing those kind of activities to know
whether the students atend the school consitently or not. The new teachers can use some
expression when they are cheking the attandance such as “Who is absent today?”, “What’s
wrong with Dila today?”, etc.

Most of the lessons end by giving the students some kind of review activity, so that
they may know is there any progress in their learning. The most common and easiest question
to sum up the lesson on that day is by asking the student about what have they learned. This
also provides an opportunity for students to voice their opinions. Ask them to rate their
understanding of the material they have learned. If most of their rates are low, there is
something wrong with the learning process. To exploring the students' confusion, the teachers
can ask them the points of confusion or ask them to write the points of confusion if there is
enough time to explain the points. If there is enough time to re-explain, just go ahead. The
teachers can also ask the students about what will they learn in the coming up meeting. It
aims to know the expectations and set their goals. By asking the students to set their goals, it
can boost the students’ motivation and give them the positive sense that they will always
make progress. The new teachers can also set any homework to the students to check the
students’ understanding of the materials. Even though, for some students, the best way to end
the lesson is by saying goodbye. Some expressions can be used for the teacher when they
want to give their students homework such as “This is your homework for tonight”, “Finish
this exercise”, etc.
