Pizza has a long history of how it became one the world's favorite foods. An independent kingdom known
as Naples was famous for its large population of poor workers, called lazzarone. These people needed an
inexpensive food that could be consumed quickly. Street vendors and restaurants began filling this need
by providing a flatbread covered with cheese, tomatoes, oil, and other toppings. It was not considered a
fancy dish. In 1851, Naples became part of Italy. During a visit in 1889, King Umberto I and Queen
Margherita visited Naples and tried a variety of pizzas. Queen Margherita's favorite type of pizza is what
we now know as Margherita pizza, with white cheese, red tomatoes, and green basil.

Later in the 1900s, Italian immigrants began baking their tasty pies in the United States. Many Neapolitans,
people from Naples, moved to the United States for factory jobs during this time period. In 1905, the first
pizzeria was G. Lombardi’s on Spring Street in Manhattan, New York. The popularity of pizza continued to
grow and finally made its way back to Italy.
