The verb to be has three meaning in Spanish: SER, ESTAR Y TENER

LONG FORM SHORT FORM

-I AM AT HOME NOW. - I’M AT HOME NOW.

-I AM EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD. - I’M EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD.

POSITIVE SENTENCES: NOUN + VERB TO BE + COMPLEMENT.

Susan is a hard-working doctor.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES: NOUN + VERB TO BE + NOT + COMPLEMENT.

Michael is not an intelligent dentist.

QUESTIONS: VERB TO BE + NOUN + COMPLEMENT + ? SHORT ANSWERS.

Is Susan a hard-working doctor? – Yes, she is.

Is Michael an intelligent dentist? – No, he isn’t
