Listening Strategies
(Unit 4, Page 44; Use after completing the answers to Exercise D)

INFERRING THE POINT OF VIEW

A person’s point of view is not always stated directly. Sometimes it may be implied by indirect
statements he or she makes. Try to infer the meaning of a person’s indirect statements to
better understand his or her point of view.
Practice. What do you think Joseph and Celina imply in the interview when they describe
attitudes about anger? What would their own behaviors be? What would be the behavior
of Taiwanese people in general? What would be the behavior of people in Latin American
countries? After listening, work with a partner to complete the chart by inferring what Joseph
and Celina would say about each category.
