Today, we're going to discuss about the benefits of


literature and SQ3R.

Litera: That's a nice topic, Teacher Gem. By the way, good morning to y'll.

GEM: Okay Litera. Let's first discuss the benefits of literature. Can you give me
one benefit of literature, Litera?

Litera: Sure Teacher. One of the benefits of Literature is facilitating the


development of language.

GEM: Awesome Litera. Great job! That's one of the benefits of Literature. The other
benefits are
(2) increasing reading achievement and enhancing reading skills and strategies
(3) enhancing writing skills and styles
(4) encouraging higher-level thinking
(5) enhancing the integration of the four language components
(6) motivating children to read
(7) encouraging learner involvement

Litera: Wow, they're too many teacher GEM.

GEM: That's correct. Too many advantages or benefits is good indicator that
literature is so important to us especially to children.

Litera: Indeed.

GEM: Since literature consists generally of three major genres: prose, poetry and
drama, we shall endeavor to apply the three strategies to the reading of the three
literary genres. Do you know the acronym of SQ3R?

Litera: Yes Teacher.

GEM: What is the acronym of SQ3R?

Litera: The acronym of SQ3R is S for Survey, Q for Question and the 3Rs are Read,
Recite and Review.

GEM: Spot on Litera. Do you know what is SQ3R?

Litera: Of course Teacher. SQ3R is a five-step comprehension strategy which stands


for Survey Question, Read, Recite, and Review developed by Francis Pleasant
Robinson in 1961 to provide techniques for students when studying content material.

GEM: You did study your lesson Litera. You haven't missed anything. :) Okay. SQ3R
is a five-step comprehension strategy wherein It helps students develop effective
study habits by engaging in its pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading
steps. Also, it fosters reading comprehension and retention of information.
