Movie Analysis: A Beautiful Mind

The movie is a true story of Dr. John Nash, he was famous for his theory in math. The
movie follows Nash’s amazing life from the time he arrives at Princeton University as a young,
brilliant and noticeable student. He was recognized as a unique intellect whose theories have
greatly influenced not only mathematics, but various other academic areas. The movie shows
progression of psychological illness on Dr. Nash, wherein he developed symptoms of mental
illness such as, being delusional, hallucination, paranoid and depression.

The focus of this movie is on Nash struggles with the terrible illness of psychological
illness, which began to affect him while a he was still a student. Afterward, his brilliance led to a
teaching and research position at a University. During this time, his paranoia began to get
worsen, he started seeing someone and started thinking of someone trying to kill him. He
started seeing a man in black, whose name was Parcher. In addition, on the time he was
teaching, there he met Alicia until they get married. At the time their married was seems to be a
fairy tale, seems to be perfect; until John condition become even worse than what it was. His
wife Alicia started to realized how sick her husband was, She did all she could to take care of
him. Dr. John Nash started his psychotic medication which he refuses to take. As
consequences, John was admitted to hospital until he is cured.

The movie portrayed a man full of determination and intelligence, however, he


developed problem that affecting his life. At the end of the movie, John was able to successfully
fight back from the delusions that are a large part of psychological illness, but he was never able
to get rid of the disease completely and the impact to his life that brought by this disease.
2. What are the problems identified in this kind of patients?

 Paranoid/hallucination – The character started thinking of someone wants to kill him and
that he is seeing someone in black suit. The beginning of the movie also showed of
paranoia, he was frustrated of not trying to come-up with an idea for his thesis, and
began to think he is a failure and would not finish school.
 Delusion – He started to believe that all people in a vehicle is watching him and those
people are trying to kill him
 Depression – due to exaggeration of his situation, John developed depression causing
him to shun from his family.

3. Identify a strategy for behavior management in this kind of patient

 Patient with psychological illness usually have to go under psychological treatment.


 This patient will need to maintain or full compliance to psychotic medication to prevent
the occurrence of psychological illness.
 Keep the patient under therapy or counseling because in can be an important factor in
long term recovery
 He will need family support, in helping patient with psychological illness, the need for
family is benefiting because the patient recognized them as someone they can cling on
or trust. They can help with giving medication to patient.
