Hello, my name is Jaz, and today we’re going to be discussing a very controversial topic that

almost everyone has heard of. Should students wear uniforms or not? In my opinion, I think
that students shouldn’t wear uniforms and here are my top 3 reasons why. Reason #1:
Individuality and Self-Expression. Many students express themselves through their style of
clothing and when students wear uniforms, everyone looks the same ultimately losing their
individuality. A lot of the time we can tell what someone’s personality may be like based on
their style of clothing or what they wear. Reason #2: Price. Many parents that enroll their
kids into school may not have the money to buy their kids uniforms as they are very
expensive. Nowadays a school shirt, a pair of pants, and a sweater cost around $150. Many
parents rather put their kids in a school that will allow them to wear the clothes they
already have rather than buying expensive clothes that they will wear. Lastly, my reason #3
is breaking rules. When students wear uniforms they don’t like, they try to bend the rules
by adding a hoodie over top, tucking their pants in, or making up excuses as to why they
aren’t wearing the actual uniform. When I first came into high school, I would always listen
to the rules and if I was wearing something incorrectly, I would immediately change it as
some part of the dress code would go towards my final mark especially in religion class. As
time went on, I changed that thought and started tucking my pants in my bright white
socks, and wearing my blue Nike zip-up hoodie. This is no small problem, instead of
learning discipline, students are breaking the rules even more. There is only one day out of
a month to wear what they want for 6 hours, which excludes the holidays as vice principals
decide what colors should be worn for example on Christmas, you are expected to wear the
colors red and green, but even then students don’t listen. Did you know that uniforms don’t
seem to have any visible impact on school averages? Math scores increased by less than
0.01% and reading scores instead went down. In a simple poster created by Laura
Rodrigeuz, it says that 83% of students are against uniforms. There was also a survey
conducted by Top America where 6 regions voted for their opinion and out of all of them, 1
region’s data says that students should wear uniforms with 14 votes being yes and 9 being
no. This is a close call and it defines that even though you’re saying yes to uniforms, it’s only
because of a few more votes. Lastly, in a pie chart, the top four reasons for opposing
wearing uniforms were because of the prices being high with a percentage of 22%, student
choice/independence being at 55%, alternative (dress codes) being at 14% and finally
other being at 7%. Now me being a student that attends a school where uniforms are a
thing, I obviously do not like the idea of wearing uniforms as they look hideous and not
attractive making me feel repulsive. Here are my top 3 reasons why I believe students
shouldn't wear uniforms and I hope I have changed your perspective. Thank you for
listening.
