Hi,

You are registered for Physical Anthropology 101 Online # 30467. This is a short term class which goes
from 6/7--7/11. The course will show up on your dashboard Sun. 6/6. Prior to the start of class get the
textbook, set up your computer, and get familiar with Canvas. Summer classes are very intense as we will
be completing a typical 16 weeks semester in 5 weeks.
This course will be taught in Canvas asynchronously. There are no set days/times you need to log in.
Work will be posted each week in a module on Monday. Work will have various due dates during the week,
but generally work is due Tues, Fri. and Sun each week. Each week there is a module with a To Do List
and all of the work for the week is linked there.
Textbook: You will need the textbook to successfully complete this class. We will be using the textbook
starting the first week of class. Wherever you order it, make sure you will have it by the first day of class
(the FC Bookstore has had delays getting out books so you might want an alternative source).
Textbook: Michael Alan Parks Biological Anthropology, 7th edition, (McGraw Hill). You can
order this text through the publisher, FC bookstore, or any other source you chose.  You can use an
ebook version if you want.      ISBN: 97 8007 803 4954
Black and White Version at FC Bookstore: I have ordered copies of the 7th edition in black and
white for a reduced cost (the cost of the regular edition in color was quite high).  It is available at
the FC bookstore.  ISBN 978 112 169 1339. I do not recommend older versions of the Park text, as there
have been a number of changes for the 7th edition.
Course work and Time Commitment:  This class cover's the same material in a regular 16 week
semester in 5 weeks. A typical 16 week semester course has expectations of 9 hours a week on
coursework. If we calculate time for a 5 week class it comes to 28 hours a week. All students are different,
some need less time and some need more time to be successful. You will need to monitor your grades to
see how much time youl need. One of the biggest barriers to student success is not creating a schedule
that devotes the time needed to be successful. Learning takes time and engagement. You will not be able
to complete work all during the week or on the weekend. You will need a schedule to log into the class
several days a week for blocks of time. Physical anthropology is a science based course and I expect all
students can be successful if they follow the information in the syllabus.
Computer:  To take this course you need a computer with online capabilities (or daily access to a
computer).   Take the time before the class begins to set up your technology and have a back up plan if you
have problems. I will be using Microsoft, powerpoint, and PDF files in this class and you will need Quick
Time or Real Player to view assigned videos and utubes.  Technology problems can be barrier to student
success, but they are not an excuse for failing to complete work.  Here is a link to get your computer tech

FC Distance Education I strongly recommend reading the information under "students." I especially
recommend taking the Canvas Orientation if you have not taken an online class before, or are not familiar
with Canvas. website- online.fullcoll.edu
Canvas -There are a lot of resources for canvas. For this class you will need to know how to; read
announcements, posts, reply to posts, complete and submit assignments, take tests and view results,
check for emails, check your grades, open files (word, powerpoint, video). Your fellow students are often a
great source for assistance, once the class has started you can post questions on the General Question
discussion board. Here's a link with additional info-

You can call the Canvas help line 844-600-4948. They will likely need your name, class CRN, specific
information on your problem and what you've done to resolve it.
Logging into Canvas- there are multiple ways to log in and access the class;
1. FC website Canvas link on the top right, click on canvas symbol to right of search bar
2. Go directly to the secure login page at: fullcoll.instructure.com
3. Login to MyGateway. Go to the Fullerton section and scroll down to the Distance Education box.
All students must log into class on the first day.  The first week is often the most difficult as you get
used to Canvas, the course set up, etc. You will need a good number of hours especially in the first week
to complete work due. You will have work due on Friday and Sunday of the first week. Make sure to set
.aside time the first week to go through the materials and complete the work due
