“It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts
wander when you were in any public place or
within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing
could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious
look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself -
anything that carried with it the suggestion of
abnormality, of having something to hide. In any
case, to wear an improper expression on your face
(to look incredulous when a victory was
announced, for example) was itself a punishable
offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak:
facecrime, it was called" (Orwell 1.5.65).
The protagonist, Winston Smith, reveals how the
Party’s abusive surveillance tactics, through the
use of advanced technology, can detect even the
most personal behaviors to expose a rebellious
spirit. Orwell, as part of the exposition, reveals the
dystopian society through the eyes of the
protagonist, Winston. The telescreens symbolize
the danger/power of technology and the control
the Party can have with its ability to keep track of
everything, preventing citizens from having
privacy or individual freedoms. The Party
maintains complete control over its citizens, even
over their facial expressions and feelings, through
the use of technology. Orwell demonstrates the
oppressive conditions created by the Party and its
ability to suppress individual freedoms using an
authoritative tone and formal diction to
communicate how surveillance creates a serious,
oppressive environment where people are
constantly punished and live in fear.

Theme Statement: Society needs to be aware of the dangers of technology and how it may be
manipulated to obtain and maintain total control by those in power.

This quote is basically saying that rulers are able to
maintain their power and control by keeping the
people ignorant. War is peace infers that if the
country is at war, the people will feel connected to
the governmet and trust them to protect the
population. freedom is slavery insinuates that
those with freedon are found to faul and slavery
means freedom. Finally, ignorence is strength
means that people are better off not being in the
know and will be happier because of that. this
quote proves our claim because is shows how the
party imbeds in their citizens minds that they
should accept whatever the party says and they will
benefit from staying ignorant

This quote is describing how history shapes history
into anithung that they want it to be. The party is
rewriting the past to fit in with their notions of the
future and make it appear as if their vision of the
future has been universal throughout history. they
had control then, they have control now, and they
will always have control. The party wants to make
sure people know that they arent going anywhere.
this quote proves our claim because it shows that
people wil never have a say and can never make a
change, because Big Brother and the party will
always be in power.

This quote is saying hwo the party wants to rid the
people of all words except the simple necessities. If
they do not have a full vocabulary, how could they
use words against the party. The party will be
creating perfect people who cannot back talk or
speak against the party, because they will not have
the words to do so. This shows how not only are
stripping people from their freedon of speech but
also ending peoples thoughts and expressions.

because you cannot have thoughts with words you
do not know. This quote supports our claim
because it shows how much control the party has
and forming the people into almost robots who are
not capable of very much.
