SUMMARY OF THE ARTICLE

Many would highlight attributes such as intellect, courage, commitment, and vision-the qualities
commonly associated with leadership when asked to describe the best leader. Such abilities and
intellect are essential but inadequate qualities for the leader. Often, weaker, more personal
qualities are left off the list, but they are also important. While a certain degree of research and
analysis is studies suggest that emotional intelligence may be the primary characteristic that
separates excellent performers from those who are merely satisfactory. Technical competence is
a minimum prerequisite for performance. With his 1995 book of the same name, psychologist
and author Daniel Goleman first took the word "emotional intelligence" to a large audience, and
Goleman first applied the idea to business with this classic HBR article in 1998. Goleman found
that truly successful leaders are characterized by a high degree of emotional intelligence in his
research on nearly 200 big, multinational corporations. An individual can have first-class
experience, an incisive mind, and an unlimited supply of good ideas without it, but he's not going
to be a great leader yet. Emotional intelligence's key components-self-awareness, self-regulation,
motivation, empathy, and social skills-can sound unbusiness-like, but Goleman, co-chair of the
Rutgers University-based Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations,
found clear links between emotional intelligence and observable business outcomes. Over the
past six years, the definition of emotional intelligence and its importance to business has
continued to fuel debate, but Goleman's article remains the authoritative resource on the topic,
with a thorough discussion of each aspect of emotional intelligence, how to identify it in
potential leaders, how and why it relates to success, and how to learn it.
