K.5.1. Use shapes, such as circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles, to describe different
objects. (Core Standard). Using sea scented play dough, the students will make sea animals
using shapes, with 100 percent completion (students will create one animal).
Differentiation:
1. Lower level students will be provided with examples of sea creatures they can model
with playdough.
2. Higher level students will come up with a name for their sea creature.
3. Advanced students will be able to describe their sea creature, describing what they
created. Example - “Blue whale, red starfish…”

K.1.1. Raise questions about the natural world. - Students will learn about the oceans of the
world through maps and globes.
Differentiation:
1. Lower level students will color in a map featuring the oceans of the world.
2. Higher level students will name the oceans and label them with use of a word bank.
3. Advanced students will label the oceans and continents.

K.2.2 Draw pictures and write words to describe objects and experiences. (Core Standard)
- Students will dictate a short story about an ocean animal using beginning, middle, and end.
Pictures will be used to help describe and illustrate the student’s story.
Differentiation:
1. Lower level students will draw a story about a sea creature.
2. Higher level students will dictate a story about a sea creature with the teacher’s
assistance.
3. Advanced students will make a sea creature puppet.

K.4.2 Observe plants and animals, describing how they are alike and how they are different
in the way they look and in the things they do. (Core Standard) - Students will use
watercolors to "re-create" an animal from the ocean. The artwork of the students will display
animals that have been introduced in the previous ocean lessons.
Differentiation:
1. Lower levels will be provided with an animal from the ocean that they can paint with
watercolors.
2. Higher level students will draw their own creature and paint it.
3. Advanced level students will look up an animal and try their best to recreate it on paper.
Using the same colors, lines, and shapes as the animal they chose.

K.4.1 Give examples of plants and animals. - Students will sing a song about an ocean animal
and/or plant by learning how to echo the teacher.
Differentiation:
1. Lower level students will observe and follow along with the song, repetition not being
necessary but encouraged.
2. Higher level students will sing and dance along to the song.
3. Advanced students will sing the song along with dancing and playing an instrument such
as maracas.

K.3.2 Investigate that things move in different ways, such as fast, slow, etc. (Core Standard)
- Students will move across the ocean floor as sea creatures while performing basic fundamental
motor locomotor skills taught by the teacher.
Differentiation:
1. Lower level students will be assigned only one sea creature that they will be encouraged
to try to mimic.
2. Higher level students will mimic the sounds of multiple ocean animals they’re assigned.
3. Advanced students will be assigned multiple animals that they will have to mimic the
movements and sounds of.
