Given the series of the activities presented students will be able to develop an understanding of
the story “The Cat in the Hat” and know the characters, along with practicing, drawing,
balancing, and rhyming skills.

II. Instructional Materials/Resources:

- The book “The Cat in the Hat”
- White Construction paper
- Markers
- Scissors
- Tissue paper
- Feathers
- Jewels
- Red solo cups

III. Essential Questions/Subject Matter/Content

- Do you know what The Cat in the Hat is?
- Have you read a Dr. Seuss book before?
- What do you think The Cat in the Hat is about?

IV. Procedures/Strategies/Methodology:
A. Introduction
I will read the children “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss because it’s the basis of my lesson and
they’ll need to understand the story in order to understand and participate in my lesson. After I
finish the story I will ask questions about the story as a review.

B. Development
- After reading the story, I will start off with a fun individual craft for the children. The
children will make their own cat in the hat red and white hat from white construction
paper. They will have to cut out the hat and decorate it by coloring in the stripes and
decorating it with various red and white decorations such as tissue paper, feathers, jewels
and more. This activity will help the children practice creativity, cutting, and drawing
inside the lines.
- For my next activity I will have a fun Cat in the Hat game prepared. I will have the
children in groups of two stack red cups to try and make the tallest cat in the hat hat they
possibly can. They will do this by stacking a cup and a piece of white construction paper
on top of that and repeat. This activity will help practice balance, patience, and
teamwork.
- For my final activity I will have the children match the rhyming words from “The Cat
and the Hat”. I will do this by giving each child a stack of paper squares that each say a
word from “The Cat and the Hat” on it, and they will need to match each pair of rhyming
words. This will help them practice they’re rhyming skills.

C. Closure
- For my closure I’ll get the children moving and active with a Dr. Seuss dance along
video. This will practice exercise and get the children moving around in a fun way.

- Afterwards, I will ask the children questions about “The Cat in the Hat” and about the
activities they did to see what information they retained.

D. Accommodations/Differentiation
- If students are struggling with cutting out the hat for The Cat in the Hat craft, then myself
or Mrs. Kosci can cut it out for them so they can just color.
- For more advanced students, they can challenge themselves by drawing their own cat in
the hat and cutting it out themselves.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
- Asking questions at the end about the book and activities.
2. Summative
- The Dr. Seuss dance along video.

Additional Notes: Although I was unable to teach this lesson due to Mrs. Kocsi’s limited time
and because I already taught a lesson with Ava and Ashlee, I still made this lesson plan because
if I were to teach a lesson it would’ve most likely been about Dr Seuss. Mrs. Kosci taught her
students a different Dr. Seuss book each day of the week for Dr. Seuss week. If I had the
opportunity I would’ve taught them about “The Cat in the Hat”.
