Activity 12
Urinary System

I. Draw and label fully the following:

1. Urinary system

2. Nephron
3. External structure of kidney

4. Internal structure of kidney

II. Explain the function of the urinary system.
Kidney and urinary system parts and their functions

The urinary system removes waste products and medicines from the body, balance the
body's fluids, balance a variety of electrolytes. It releases hormones to control blood pressure
and release a hormone to control red blood cell production. It also helps with bone health by
controlling calcium and phosphorus.

III. Compare the length and position of the urethra in the male and in the female.

It is roughly 20 cm long in males since it must traverse the length of the penis, while it is only 4
cm long in females.

IV. Explain the rate of glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion in
the nephron in maintaining homeostasis.

The three (3) primary steps in which kidneys filter blood and preserve proper electrolyte
balance are: glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion. Glomerular
filtration is the first step in the production of urine, and it removes solutes from the blood.

V. Name three (3) function of the nephrons.

Its function is vital for homeostasis of blood volume, blood pressure, and plasma
osmolarity. The primary role of the nephron is to remove all waste products from the blood,
including solid wastes and excess water, to turn blood into urine, and to reabsorb, secrete, and
excrete a variety of substances.

VI. Name three (3) composition of urine.

Urine is a water-based aqueous solution that contains more than 95% water. Urea, chloride,
sodium, potassium, creatinine, and other dissolved ions, as well as inorganic and organic
compounds, are among the other constituents. Urea is a non-toxic molecule made up of toxic
ammonia and CO2.
