We Dedicate this Customized Training Manual to all Kenyans who were in one way or the other
been affected by the Covid 19 Pandemic.

We also take the pleasure to Dedicate this Training Manual to all the Practicing Counseling
Psychologists/Clinical Psychologists in the Republic of Kenya during this Pandemic.

We appreciate them for being the front line dealing with the Psychopathology and General
Mental health challenges during these interesting times.

 ABSTRACT

One of the American Poet and Educator, Henry W. LongFellow (1807-1882)once said that

‘….if you knock long enough and loud enough at the Gate ,you are sure to wake up someone’

This basically means that you may not necessarily have people open for you but you shall have
woken them up from their sleep all the same. Perhaps a few concern one may respond to your
distress call by opening the Gate.

Several years later, another great and renown American Former President by the name Theodore
Roosevelt also added this famous quote that

‘….it is not the critics who count; not the man who points out how the strongman stumbled or
where the doers of the deed could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who
is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust, sweat and blood; who strives valiantly;
who at the best know the know in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the
worst if he fails at least fails while daring greatly so that his place is never with those timid
souls who know neither victory nor defeat’

Indeed Mr. Dwight Morrow (1873-1931) could not have said it better when he said

“..This World is divided into people who do things and people who take credits. Try if you can
to belong to the first group. There is far less competitors’

As a team of well trained and very qualified Professional Counselors, practicing in the Republic
of Kenya, we are very much in touch with the daily happenings in our society. The recent
upsurge in the Domestic Violence and Mental Health Challenges in our Country due to the
Covid 19 Pandemic is something of great concerns to any well-meaning Kenyans and the
Counselors are not an exception.

Indeed with other emerging issues in the world today, there is serious need to have as many
Kenyans as is practically possible to have frequent visit to many Counseling Firms we have in
our Nation.

This is the very critical reason why as a pool of Professional counselors, we are developing this
Training Curriculum that is customized to help in Training the Target Audience in this particular
project to embower Our Single Mothers in our Nation affected by Covid 19 Pandemic.

Counseling Psychologists’ Consortium(CPC) is a Pool is well trained Professional Counseling

Psychologists with clear truck records in Psycho-Education and General Professional Counseling
Services to the Members of the Community.
Moreover, having the expertise to develop this kind of a Training Curriculum means that we
have the same capacity to implement it with our Counselors who boast of the wealth of
experience in Professional Counseling.

USA Scientists reporting on condition looked at 70 patients diagnosed between July 2004 and
April 2008.The syndrome was first discovered by the Japanese researchers in the early
1990s.Experts believe the symptoms of ‘Broken –Heart Syndrome’ may be brought on by a
surge of stress hormones such as ‘adrenaline’.

These may cause part of the heart to be temporarily weakened or become ‘stunned’. The
Research on ‘broken-heart syndrome ‘ was reported in American Journal of Cardiology.

As a team of Counseling Psychologist under the Umbrella of CPC, we find this Research
findings to be an area of great fascination especially during this Covid 19 Pandemic that has led
to more people in the World today having more heart-broken syndromes than any other time in
the history of humanity.

Our training Manual is therefore tailored to tackle some of these challenges in our Trainings.

The Training Overview

The Aim of this course is intended to empower the learner with practical skills and knowledge
towards personal growth which is to bring out individual behavioral –change from maladaptive
traits acquired during the Covid 19 pandemic period and to enable individuals get back to what
we are dubbing as ;FACTORY SETTING’(Behaviors of individual before the Covid 19
pandemic)

The Training Specific Objectives

By the end of this course/training programme, the learner is expected to be able to;

 Understand What Professional counseling is

 Who is supposed to seek for professional counseling
 The key counseling concepts
 Define broadly the term ‘behavioral –change’
 Define and explain personal development and the concepts
 List and explain the techniques for behavioral –change.

Training Introduction

As a team of Professional Counseling Psychologists under the Umbrella of CPC, Our Principal
Objective by Developing this Training Manual Customized for the Single Mothers affected by
the Covid 19 Pandemic is to contribute to our Society by using our vast experience in matter
Professional Counseling to have these Single Mother stabilized Mentally so that they are able to
be empowered financially as they navigate the effects of Corona Virus in Kenya.

At CPC, we can confidently say that in our everyday Counseling Practice, Single Mothers too
form part of Clients we handle every days in our busy Therapy Rooms.

This Training Manual is Tailored to approach our Training in different Professional Aspect as we
strictly implement the Manual.

Definition of Terms

i) Training

It involves imparting of special knowledge or skills and attitude to do a given /specific task. It is
action oriented.

There is strife to bring an individual to specific level. Training focuses on specific knowledge,
skills and specific outcome.

Training is more experiential an practical (Pragmatic).
