Title: EXPERIMENT 4: COMPLEX FORMATION
Aim: To prepare complexes of chromium (III) and Iron (III)

4.1. There was no colour change up until we added NaOH, the solution
turned dark green.
Equation: [Cr(H2O)3(OH)3] + NaOH → Cr(NaOH)3 + H2O

4.2. The colour changed from light orange iron (iii) chloride to red after
adding sodium oxalate it changed to the original light orange colour.

4.3. The solution changed from clear orange to milky white. After adding
NH4CNS to one portion it did not change; however, the other portion
changed to red-brown after adding some NaOH.

4.4. 2Fe + 2I → 2Fe +I2

• The solution changes from light orange to dark orange.

2[FeF6] + 2I → 2[FeF6] +I2

• When we added NaF to Iron (III); the colour change from light orange to
an even lighter brownish/pinkish colour. Then when we added potassium
iodine to the solution the colour did not change.
The second solution was cream yellow whileas the first solution was the same
colour but it was lighter.

Title: REACTIONS OF ZINC

4.4.1. Zinc, sulphur, oxygen and hydrogen

4.4.2. When adding sodium hydroxide to the zinc (II) solution, the solution
creates a thick white precipitate that dissolves and fades as we shake the
mixture. The solution then becomes clear.

4.4.3. The zinc (II) sulphate reacts with ammonia to precipitate a white
gelatinous Zn (OH)2. The precipitate dissolves as the ammonia become
excessive and the solution becomes clear.

4.4.4. Sodium hydroxide also precipitate zinc (II) sulfate forming a cloudy
precipitate. The zinc (II) sulfate dissolves as we start to shake the solution,
leaving the solution clear in colour.
ZnSO4 + 2NaOH + HCl → Zn(OH)2 + NaCl +HSO4

4.4.5. After adding sodium hydroxide the solution formed a cloudy precipitate
that disolved as the sodium hydroxide became excessive. The solution then
formed a weighing form of excess sodium hydroxide
ZnSO4 + 2NaOH → Zn(OH)2 + Na2SO4

4.4.6. The solution is clear in colour and it has weighing form floating in the
solution.
H2 S + ZnSO4 → HSO4 + ZnS

4.4.7. The solution has clear floating wave-like things (weigh form) and it is clear
in colour. H2S acts as a signalling molecule and a chemical reagent.

4.4.8. Zinc oxide dissolves in dilute acid. The colour of the reaction is clear. Zinc
chloride and water are formed during this reaction.
4.4.9. The solution becomes white in colour and form zinc precipitate.
