Generating Electricity with a Wind Turbine

The data show the energy generated from renewable sources such as geothermal,

biomass and wind only supply about 8% of the total world energy production ("Key

World Energy Statistics (2018)"). But the transition of energy from fossil fuels to

renewable energy sources has begun. Wind power as a renewable energy source has

large potential and less environmental impact than fossil fuel. But, how electricity can

be generated from wind power through wind turbine? There are some steps, how

electricity can be generated through wind turbine.

The first step is wind blows on the blades and makes the turbine turn. When the

wind blows across one side of the blade, it will make different air pressure on the

other side of the blade. The different air pressure on the two sides of blades will lift

and rotate the blades. Then, generator convert wind energy to electricity. The rotation

of the blades will create aerodynamic force. The force transfer from blades to the

generator and converted into electricity.

The next step is the transformer make electricity ready to send. The electricity

from generator is high voltage electricity. So the electricity needs to be transmitted to

the transformer. The transformer will reduce high voltage into lower voltage

electricity that ready to used by customers. After that, the electricity is transmitted to
the power grid. The power grid is useful for delivering electricity from the wind

power plant to customers such as homes, industries, factories, and offices.

Finally, people can use electricity from wind power. After a long distance, the

power grid network moves the electricity until reaching home. In home the electricity

will be transmitted from power grid to receiver instrument then, the electricity ready

to power television, computers, and household application.

In conclusion, generating electricity from the wind turbine is long processes.

Start from wind farm then electricity transmitted to the transformer and using a long

distance power grid, electricity reach the consumers. After understanding the long

processes, people have a chance to use electricity wisely and not become wasteful.
