ACTIVITY 1 – ADMINISTERING FIRST AID

Scenario: You and your two other friends were hiking and along the trail you saw a man who is
unconscious, with blood oozing from his head. How should you deal with this situation?

What is the first thing that you should do?

If you suspect the he or she has a serious head injury the first thing you should do is to
take care of three things right from the start. Observe for signs of shock, a concussion or
laceration, and a fracture. Position the victim so he or she is immobile, in order to prevent other
injuries. Treat the cuts and wounds for bleeding to avoid infection. The great medicinal drug is to
get the victim to a nearby health center as fast as you can.

List everything you think you would need to do as the first persons to arrive at the scene.

 look for signs they are breathing

 check for a pulse or heartbeat
 If the unconscious person is bleeding heavily, locate the injury and place strong, direct
pressure on the wounded area to slow the flow of blood.
 You should continually use direct pressure on the wounds.
 Clean the cuts and wounds to avoid infections
 Do not give the person who has suffered head injury any food or water. Both can result in
vomiting which can create respiration issues.
 If those things won’t work and the bleeding does not stop you should try to find for help
and called emergency personnel immediately.
 Apply a tourniquet above the bleeding area to slow the bleeding until emergency services
arrive. To apply a tourniquet, wrap a cord or bandage tightly around the affected limb.
