SECTION D (NOVEL)

Level : Beginners

QUESTION 1

“Good values bring positive effects.”

How far is this true in the novel you have read? Support your answer with close reference to
the text.

Point 1 : We need to be a responsible person (Chapter 1)

 Every morning, Newt would prepare a breakfast for his family. Since last year, Newt
offered to take over on making breakfast for his family because his mom, Mary
Newman, seemed to be very busy with her work and phone calls.
 As a responsible kid to her parents, Newt offered to help his mom prepared
breakfast every day.

P.O.V :

 In my opinion, Newton has shown a good lesson by showing his responsibility

towards his family by helping his mom to make a breakfast. If I were a 10-year-old
Newt, I could hardly boil myself water! My mother wouldn’t allow me to be near the
stove as she is frantic that I might cause a disaster.

Point 2 : We must always help those who are in need. (Chapter 12 , 13)

 Newt was feeling excited after he helped Cecil to take a big bass drum when
someone from behind a stack of cupboard boxes pile grabbed him by his ankle.
 It was Mr.Clay, who was a locksmith that suffered from amnesia.
 He forgot his way back home and got lost.
 Newt helped to walk him home.

P.O.V :

 In my opinion, Newt has shown a good lesson in helping others by helping his friend
Cecil, to take a big bass drum and walked Mr.Clay to his house. From this event, I
have learnt that the value of helpful is need in one’s to build a prosperous
community.

Point 3 : We must be brave to face our fear. (Chapter 11)

 Newt has acrophobia. When Cecil asked him to climb the dumpster to take the drum
for him, he was hesitated at first. But when Cecil reminded him that he was Captain
Nobody and he should not have fear, he started to feel confident with himself and
climbed up to the dumpster.

P.O.V :

 No matter who we are, we should face our fear to be braver to face any
circumstances in life. As a good friend to Cecil, he fulfilled his friend’s wish to have
the drum bass. Though he was afraid of height, he was willing to forget all that and
crawled up to get it for him. He valued their friendship more than his own
acrophobic. His determination to accomplish his friend’s wise is admirable and
should be considered as admirable.
QUESTION 2

Write about an event that has shown you the importance of making a responsible decision.
Support your answer with close reference to the text.

AN EVENT : When he decided to save Reggie Ratner.

 When Reggie Ratner climbed up to the water tower to spray encouragement words
for his school, his leg got stuck between the two beams on the water tower.
 People at the ground thought that Reggie wanted to kill himself. So Newt climbed up
to the water tower to save Reggie Ratner.
 Even though height was the problem on that time, but he ignored it and faced his
fear to save a life.
 With the help of his friends, Newt climbed up to the water tower. The water tower
seemed old. Newt almost fell down when his leg reached one of the rotten rung.
 Every time Newt looked down, he felt scared and his fears started to embrace him.
 But, since he felt that this was his responsibility to save Reggie, he continued
climbing up.
 He wanted to do so because he was the only one that knew what actually happened
during the Big Game.
 When he reached the water tower, he tried to talk to Reggie.
 He told Reggie that he knew what really happened in the Big Game.
 It was not Reggie Ratner who put Chris in coma. It was Daryl Peeps’s head that
bumped onto Chris’s head.
 Reggie Ratner was shocked to hear that because he was trying to say the same thing
to the people but no one believed him.
 Newt promised that when they got down, he would tell people the truth.
P.O.V :

 In my opinion, it was a right decision when Newt decided to help Reggie Ratner.
After the Big Tackle, everybody blamed Reggie for knocking Chris down into coma.
He had such a tensed life after that. His tire was slashed and his house was sprayed
with paints. People were fumingly mad over Reggie. Reggie, on the other hand, kept
quiet and did not fight back. He knew it was pointless to tell people the truth
because they would never listened to him. When he decided to climb on the
Appleton Water Tower, everybody expected he wanted to kill himself. Everybody
panicked! Seeing this, Newt thought that it was his responsibility to rescue Reggie
and tell him he knew what had happened and that he was not the person who
knocked Chris down. At first, Newt hesitated because he was so afraid to climb up
the water tower. However, since Newt determined to save Reggie and tell him what
he saw during the game, he climbed up being himself (Newt Newman) not Captain
Nobody. This incident shows that Newt’s decision on climbing up made him a new
person: braver, more confident and not afraid of height. Newt overcomes his fear of
height. In this situation, by helping others has made Newt helped himself as well.
Therefore, it is wise that Newt has made the responsible decision because the
decision he made saves people’s life, changed him to be a better person and showed
people that violence is not the core solution to problems. His action taught us the
importance of making a responsible decision: to believe in oneself, to believe in the
truth and to not blame people solely over mistakes he/she has made.

P.O.V :

 From this event, it taught me that we have to be helpful with our friends because
one day they will help us when we are in our hard times.
 Through this event, it shows how Newt cares for his friend so much that forgets his
own fear.
 He sacrifices himself to fulfill his friend’s wish.

circumstances. If I were Newt, I will definitely do the same just to overcome my fear
in order to help people.

QUESTION 2

Based on the novel you have studied, describe a situation where one of the characters has
done an amazing deed. Give reasons why you find this deed amazing with close reference
to the text.

Newton Newman (Chapter 17)

SITUATION : Upholding the responsibility of taking care of the Ferocious

 One day, Colby Bryn and Daryl Peeps from Fillmore High school came to Newt’s
class.
 They were there to send a goodwill ambassador on tour with their mascot, Ferocious
the Ferret and one of kids in the class would get to take Ferocious home overnight.

friends’ way.
 They were panicked.
 Rickey Ratner asked Newt to tell people that harassed his cousin; Ricky Ratner, to
stop doing that because it was not Reggie who put Chris into coma.
 Ricky suddenly saw the ferocious in the cage. He asked his friends to yank the cage
from Newt’s arm.
 They attacked the cage and then scratched and clawed the cage until the cage door
flew open.
 Ferocious took off down the block until it reached a busy highway that full with cars.
 On the highway, Newt tried to catch Ferocious.

to slow down.
 Finally all for lanes of traffic came to stop. Newt and Ferocious had the freeway to
themselves.
 As Newt was trying to catch Ferocious, a huge shadow passed them. it was a small
airplane, coughing smoke from is engine. It was flying so low that its tires rolled
across the roofs of the stopped cars.
 Fortunately, by saving Ferocious on the highway, he saved the airplane as well.

P.O.V : Why the deed of taking care of the Ferocious is amazing?

P.O.V 1 : Shows that Newt is a very responsible boy

 It was incredible when a 10 years old kid knew the responsibility that has been given
to him. He tried to capture the ferocious though he has to put his life at risk. He went
across the jungle and highway just to put it back in its cage. This really shows that
Newt took his responsibility seriously.

P.O.V 2 : Shows that Newt is a trustworthy boy

 For a 10 year-old boy to uphold such big responsibility given to him is not an easy
task. What more to be surrounded by bullies. Eventually, Newt kept himself calm
and did not hold any grudge towards people who bullied him. Newt teaches me to
be someone who can be trusted in any situations. If a person gives you a
responsibility, you should uphold it and make the person trust you.

P.O.V 3 : Shows that Newt is a changed character

 Taking care and rescuing the ferocious really changed Newt to be a new person. He
became braver, more confident and self-resilience. He has changed to become a
hero to everybody where he saved the lives of people on the airplane and the
highways. If it is not because of him, hundreds might have died of the crash.

QUESTION 1

Standing for one’s own principles is important. Based on novel that you have read, support
this statement with close reference to the text.

Point 1 : To believe in the truth

 The incident where Newt saved Reggie Ratner from Appleton Water Tower.
Everybody believed that Reggie climbed up the water tower to commit suicide since
he was too tensed up when everybody accused him of knocking Chris Newman into
coma.
 Newt believed that Reggie Ratner was innocent (because he had a dream and saw
who knocked Chris down) and was willing to go to any extend to reveal the truth.
 Although Newt was afraid, he plucked all his courage to reveal the unrevealed truth
about his brother’s coma incident.

P.O.V :

 In my opinion, Newt has a basic quality of being honest which lacks either in the
elders and children.
 If I were him, even though I would want to tell the truth I could not have develop the
courage to climb up the water tower. Although Newt was only ten, he proved
everyone wrong by putting the truth in front of everything and bravely climbed up
the water tower.

Point 2 : Being a responsible person

 Newt believed that he had to be responsible towards Ferocious the Ferret, although
he was forced to take it back home. So, Newt was not afraid to risk his life while
saving the ferret which escaped from the cage and started to run on the highway.
P.O.V :

 In my opinion, for a ten year old boy risking his life to save a ferret is something we
do not see every day. Newt has portrayed a very responsible attitude that should be
followed by the eldest till the youngest.
 If I were him, I would have not the courage to risk my life for the sake of
responsibility. His action inspires me to be a person who shows more responsibility
in life.

Point 3 : Being a helpful person

 An incident when Newt helped Cecil to take the drum bass from the dumpster.
 Newt always believed that he should be helpful and be there at any cost for his
friends.
 Although, Newt wanted to go meet Chris after school, he still dashed off to the
dumpster since Cecil called him for help.

P.O.V :

 In my opinion, Newt has shown such a wonderful personality where he left

wherever he was once he knew his friends needed help. Many these days, never
care to help and value friendship.
 In that case, I guess Newt has inspired me to be more helpful towards my family and
friends.
QUESTION 2

“School education play important role in shaping one mind” close reference to the text, how
far is this true of the novel you have read.

Point 1 : Encourage student to have imaginative and creative thinking

(Chapter

3)

 Throughout the day in class, Newt’s teacher did a slide show about the gods and
goddesses of ancient Rome and Greece. Newt was wondering who his inner other
was. So he imagined himself as Zeus, god of lightning or Neptune, who ruled the
seas.

P.O.V :

 In my point of view, teachers always encourage students to have an imaginative and

creative thinking. For example, teachers usually will teach with packed information
about a topic rather than just using a single textbook. They use riddles, jokes,
pictures or showing any video clips related to their lesson to teach. Therefore,
students will understand the lesson better and by this way, it will create a creative
and imaginative thinking by students.

Point 3 : Concern over students’ life (Chapter 10)

 When Newt entered the classroom, he got tons of stares and snickers. When Mrs.
Young saw Newt, she wanted to know the name of his character. Mrs. Young told
Principal Toomey who Newt was, she was worried about Newt’s state of mind. After
having a discussion, Principle Toomey told Newt that Captain Nobody always
welcomed to school.

P.O.V :

 In my point of view, students spend half of their day in school. So teachers are
considered as second parents for students. They need to take a good care on
students. Teachers should try to create a happy environment for students. Other
than that, teachers should give freedom for students to do activities that can
improve their quality and stay happy under teacher’s concerns.

Point 3 : Teachers as protectors of students from being bullied (Chapter 14).

 Ricky Ratner and his friends blocked Newt’s pathway and threatened him. Cecil, JJ
and fourth grade boys stood by Newt. Mr. Toomey stepped up and looked at the
incident spot. Ricky saw him and left Newt alone.

P.O.V :

 In my point of view, teachers taking the responsibility on students’ safety while they
are in school area. For example, protect them from any harm or being bullied in
school. By this way, students can focus on their study without getting distracted.
MODEL ANSWERS

Beginners

“In life, we should be brave.” With close reference to the text, explain how this quality is
shown in the novel.

Sample answer

The novel I have studied is Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. After reading the
novel, it is clear that we should be brave in our life. This is portrayed in the novel by several
characters.

Firstly, we should be brave in life because it will bring us victory. This is clearly
shown by Chris Newman during the Big Game between his team and Merrimac High. The
Big Game is the highlight of the American football season in the town of Appleton. It is
something worth watching as the tickets are sold out weeks ahead and they even have a
parade prior to the Final. During the game, the tense is immensely high as both teams are
not quitting easily. When it comes to the last minute of the game, Chris does something
spectacular by finding his own way to the other defensive line for a touchdown. Although he
later suffers from a coma due to the Big Tackle, he manages to bring victory to his team for
the second time. His bravery is ‘paid off’ although he is knocked down.

Besides, we should be brave in our life because it will help us to overcome our own
fear. This can be seen during the incident at the Appleton water tower. In the beginning of
the story, Newt is portrayed as someone who is afraid of heights. Although he manages to
overcome the fear when he helps Cecil to get the big bass drum off the dumpster, the water
tower poses a big challenge for New. After JJ helps him up to reach the ladder, Newt puts
his step upwards, trying to reach Reggie who is stuck on top of the tower. When he is
halfway through, he stops and looks to the ground. He is terrified as his position is too high
for him. However, he gathers all his courage and proceeds with his climbing.

In short, based on the evidences given, it is very clear that we should be brave in life.
Life sometimes can hit us with difficult times, but being brave to endure those challenges will
definitely help us to overcome them. Not to forget, being brave will also bring us victory that
we deserve.
Intermediate Learners

Based on the following novel you have studied, describe one action that is taken by a
character that you disagree with. Support your answer with close reference to the text.

Sample answer

The novel that I have studied is Captain Nobody, written by Dean Pitchford. There
are many interesting incidents in the novel. However, there is one action that has been made
by one character in the novel which I tend to disagree.

I disagree with Reggie’s decision to climb the Appleton water tower. Firstly, it is quite
irrational for him to climb the tower just to spray the Merrimac’s colour on the water tank. He
has created a big mess by creating public assumption that he is going to end his life. It has
also created a false alarm to the authorities when the place is swarmed with policemen. His
sensation does not stop there as he is also being broadcasted live on the television.

Apart from that, Reggie’s action has attracted Newt’s attention, who feels dutiful to
explain the real situation to Reggie. Newt’s work hard to climb the water tower with the help
of his two friends. When he reaches the top, he manages to figure out Reggie’s real intention
of climbing the tower. Newt would not have to risk his life as well, just to explain to
something to Reggie. The situation even gets worse when Reggie lands on Newt and breaks
his ankle and ribs. Later at the hospital, it is also revealed that Newt suffers a mild
concussion. If Reggie had been rationale about all the negativity he has been through since
the Big Tackle incident, he would have just consulted the school counsellor instead of trying
to express himself from on top of the water tower.

In short, that is undeniably the one action taken by Reggie that I could not simply
agree with. He has endangered not only his life, but also the life of another person. Plus,
there are a lot of ways for us to solve our problems rather than creating a big mess for
everyone.
Advanced Learners

Suggest an alternate ending of the novel you have studied. Support your answer with close
reference to the text.

Sample answer

The novel that I have studied is Captain Nobody, written by Dean Pitchford. There
are many interesting incidents in the novel. If I am given a chance to alternate any part of the
story, I will choose to have an alternate ending.

The actual ending of the novel starts when Newt is hospitalised and later Chris
wakes up from his coma. After that, Chris insists that the victory parade is led by his brother.
Newt agrees to that only both his side kicks join in. Together, they sit on a convertible and
entertain the crowd. Then, when they are home, everything goes back to normal, Mom
relying on Newt about her misplaced things and Dad gets back to his busy work. The story
comes to its resolution part when Chris jokingly says that there is a monster under Newt’s
bed and he switches the lights off. Before that Chris also mentions about a little old lady who
comes from out of town. Chris introduces himself to the old lady and to his surprise; the old
lady says that she did not know that Newton Newman had a big brother.

If I am given the chance to have an alternative to the ending, I would choose to alter
the part where everything goes back to normal after they come home when the parade is
over. In my opinion, Mom and Dad should not get back to their normal routines after what
had happened since the Big Game. Mom should become more responsible and she most
not rely Newt to find all her stuffs. After what happened, she should show more appreciation
towards Newt as the ‘old’ Newt does not longer exist in the house. The same thing should
also be happening to Dad. He should find a new job because his current job requires him to
spend less time with his family. To show that they are grateful that both of their children are
finally recovering, they should have put more focus and spend a holiday together. Besides,
they already face too much of Appleton has to offer and it is about time for them to venture
into new experiences. Apart from that, I will also change the ending when Newt has finally
been accepted into a more prestigious school in the country. His family members are proud
of him and his best friends are going to miss him when he leaves Appleton for the school.

That would be the ending that I would like to suggest if I am given the chance to do
so. That will definitely make the story more interesting and perhaps, Captain Nobody 2 will
be coming out soon and telling stories of his teenage years.
