Cricket field

Acricketfieldisalargegrassfieldonwhichthegameofcricketisplayed.Althoughgenerallyoval
inshape,thereisawidevarietywithinthis:somearealmostperfectcircles,someelongatedovals
andsomeentirelyirregularshapeswithlittleornosymmetry–buttheywillhaveentirelycurved
boundaries,almostwithoutexception.Therearenofixeddimensionsforthefieldbutitsdiameter
usuallyvariesbetween450feet(137m)and500feet(150m).Cricketisunusualamongmajor
sports(alongwithgolf,Australianrulesfootballandbaseball)inthatthereisnoofficialrulefora
fixed-shapegroundforprofessionalgames.Onmostgrounds,aropedemarcatestheperimeterof
thefieldandisknownastheboundary.

TheCricketpitchdimensions

Withintheboundaryandgenerallyasclosetothecentreaspossiblewillbethesquarewhichisan
areaofcarefullypreparedgrassuponwhichcricketpitchescanbepreparedandmarkedforthe
matches.Thepitchiswherebatsmenhitthebowledballandrunbetweenthewicketstoscore
runs,whilethefieldingteamtriestoreturntheballtoeitherwickettopreventthis.

Field size

TheICCStandardPlayingConditionsdefinetheminimumandmaximumsizeoftheplayingsurface
forinternationalmatches.Law19.1.3[1]ofICCMen'sTestMatchPlayingConditionsaswellasICC
Men'sOneDayInternationalPlayingConditionsstates:

19.1.3 The aim shall be to maximise the size of the playing area at each
venue. With respect to the size of the boundaries, no boundary shall be
longer than 90 yards (82.29 meters), and no boundary should be shorter
than 65 yards (59.43 meters) from the centre of the pitch to be used.

Inaddition,theconditionsrequireaminimumthree-yardgapbetweenthe"rope"andthe
surroundingfencingoradvertisingboards.Thisallowsplayerstodivewithoutriskofinjury.

Theconditionscontainagrandfatherclause,whichexemptsstadiumsbuiltbeforeOctober2007.
However,moststadiumswhichregularlyhostinternationalgameseasilymeettheminimum
dimensions.

AtypicalTestmatchstadiumwouldbelargerthanthesedefinedminimums,withover
20,000sqyd(17,000m2)ofgrass(havingastraightboundaryofabout80m).[2]Incontrastan
associationfootballfieldneedsonlyabout9,000sqyd(7,500m2)ofgrass,andanOlympic
stadiumwouldcontain8,350sqyd(6,980m2)ofgrasswithinits400mrunningtrack,makingit
difficulttoplayinternationalcricketinstadiumsnotbuiltforthepurpose.Nevertheless,Stadium
AustraliawhichhostedtheSydneyOlympicsin2000haditsrunningtrackturfedoverwith30,000
seatsremovedtomakeitpossibletoplaycricketthere,atacostofA$80million.[3]Thisisoneof
thereasonscricketgamesgenerallycannotbehostedoutsidethetraditionalcricket-playing
countries,andafewnon-TestnationslikeCanada,theUAEandKenyathathavebuiltTeststandard
stadiums.

The pitch

Mostoftheactiontakesplaceinthecentreofthisground,onarectangularclaystripusuallywith
shortgrasscalledthepitch.Thepitchmeasures22yards(20m)long.

Ateachendofthepitchthreeuprightwoodenstakes,calledthestumps,arehammeredintothe
ground.Twowoodencrosspieces,knownasthebails,sitingroovesatopthestumps,linkingeach
toitsneighbour.Eachsetofthreestumpsandtwobailsiscollectivelyknownasawicket.Oneend
ofthepitchisdesignatedthebattingendwherethebatsmanstandsandtheotherisdesignated
thebowlingendwherethebowlerrunsintobowl.Theareaofthefieldonthesideofthelinejoining
thewicketswherethebatsmanholdshisbat(theright-handsideforaright-handedbatsman,the
leftforaleft-hander)isknownastheoffside,theotherasthelegsideoronside.

Linesdrawnorpaintedonthepitchareknownascreases.Creasesareusedtoadjudicatethe
dismissalsofbatsmen,byindicatingwherethebatsmen'sgroundsare,andtodeterminewhethera
deliveryisfair.

Parts of the field

Forlimitedoverscricketmatches,therearetwoadditionalfieldmarkingstodefineareasrelatingto
fieldingrestrictions.The"circle"or"fieldingcircle"isanovaldescribedbydrawingasemicircleof
30yards(27.4m)radiusfromthecentreofeachwicketwithrespecttothebreadthofthepitch
andjoiningthemwithlinesparallel,30yards(27.4m)tothelengthofthepitch.Thisdividesthefield
intoaninfieldandoutfieldandcanbemarkedbyapaintedlineorevenlyspaceddiscs.Theclose-
infieldisdefinedbyacircleofradius15yards(13.7m),centredatmiddlestumpguardonthe
poppingcreaseattheendofthewicket,andisoftenmarkedbydots.
