4. What adverse effects of inhaled corticosteroids would you discuss with the patient?

-Side effects are generally mild with inhaled steroids, which is why doctors often prescribe them for use.
In most cases, the benefits of the steroids outweigh any possible side effects.
Common side effects of inhaled steroids include:
 Hoarseness
 Cough
 Sore throat
 Oral thrush

5. Explain the steps involved with proper metered dose inhaler technique.
1. Remove cap and shake the inhaler vigorously.
2. Breathe out slowly and completely.
3. Hold the inhaler in the upright position.
4. Insert the mouthpiece into mouth between closed lips.
5. Depress the canister once and….
6… at the same time begin slow deep inhalation (co-ordination).
7. Remove the inhaler with closed lips.
8. Hold breath for 10-15 seconds.
9. Wait for 20-30 seconds before starting the second puff.
