Naturally, some of the more rare combinations—such as a mixture of cellos with trombones—will present problems of tonal balance. Such difficulties can be over- come in most cases either by the use of mutes or by assigning the heaviest instru ments to outside parts. ‘There are two solos particularly intended for TUBA: “Elegie”, Massenet, page 14 and “Base Vile Blues", page 40. In addition, TUBA may be used on the lowest part of the following numbers, “Prayer”, page 6; “Northern Song”, page 12; “Misspelled Music”, page 13; “Marche Funebre", page 27; “In Memoriam”, page 42; and “Ricercare”, page 46.
