1. Raise the fork to a height to slip the wheel into position.
See illustration.
2. Unscrew the axle nuts to the maximum possible position.
3. Slip in the wheel axle into the fork dropouts such that the
dropout rests on the axle between the unscrewed axle nut
and the inner black coloured locknut. Make sure the drive
rotation direction is correct. The rotation direction would
be mentioned on the sidewalls of the tires.

Pedal Installation (Tool required: 15 mm spanner)

1. Apply a small amount of grease to the threads of each
pedal.
2. Look for the “L” or “R” sticker on the side or end of each
pedal.
3. Turning the spindle clockwise by hand, thread the pedal
marked ‘R’ into the crank arm on the right (drive) side of
the bicycle.

5 scolariAn www.scolarian.com
4. Similarly, turning the spindle counter clockwise by hand,
thread the pedal marked ‘L’ into the crank arm on the left
side of the bike.
5. Make sure that you are not “cross-threading”, which can
strip the threads in the crank arm. If the threads do not
turn easily, don’t force them. Back the spindle out and
start over.
6. Once the pedals are threaded into the crank arm, tighten
the spindle securely to the crank arm with a 15mm open
end spanner.

Seat Assembly (Tool required: 5mm Allen Key)

1. Apply some (just enough to apply a very thin layer) bike
grease to the seat post.
2. Loosen the seat clamp bolt and insert the seat post (with
seat attached) into the seat tube. Be sure that the seat
post is inserted past the ‘minimum insertion line.’
3. Adjust the angle of the seat so that the top of the seat is
parallel to the ground or comfortable to the rider.

7 scolariAn www.scolarian.com
4. Tighten the seat post clamp bolt at the desired height to 8
N-m.
THE SEATPOST ‘MINIMUM INSERTION’ MARK SHOULD NOT BE VISIBLE
WHEN THE SEAT POST IS INSERTED INTO THE SEAT TUBE OF THE
BIKE.

Saddle height
Correct saddle height helps to obtain most comfortable riding
position and maximum pedalling efficiency.
While sitting on the bicycle with one pedal at its lowest point,
place the heel of your foot on the pedal. The correct saddle
height will allow the knee to be slightly bent in this position.
The most optimum height for performance and comfort is

8 scolariAn www.scolarian.com
when the angle formed between the femur bone and the leg
(shin) bone at the knee joint is between 250 - 350 in the above
said bent position.

Seat Position and Angle (Tool required: 6mm Allen Key)

The standard Scolarian Bike comes with a Micro Adjustable
Seatpost. Steps to adjust:
1. Loosen the Seat Bolt using a 6mm Allen Key.
2. Once the seat becomes loose, move the seat by sliding it
along the rails. Make sure the seat rests on the clamp
within the boundaries marked on the Right (Drive) side of
the seat railing.
3. After the desirable seat position is ascertained, hold the
clamp assembly and tilt the seat to adjust the angle of the
seat.
4. After the desirable positions are achieved, tighten the bolt
to 50 N-m.

Rear Wheel Flip (Tool required: 15mm Spanner, 3mm Allen Key)
The Flip-Flop hub installed in this bike allows you to ride your
bicycle in two modes, fixed gear and freewheel. When you
purchase your bike, the fixed fear sprocket will be on the right
(chain) side of the bike. But if you find yourself tired of the
constant pedalling, simply flip the wheel and use the
freewheel. To change from one mode to the other follow the
following steps:
1. Unscrew the axle nuts from the rear axle using a 15mm
Spanner.
2. Unscrew the chain tensioners to loosen the chain using the
3mm Allen Key. See the illustration.
3. Slide the wheel forward so that the axle is free of the
frame dropouts, and slip the chain off the rear sprocket.
4. Flip the wheel around and slide the chain onto the new
sprocket.
5. Slide the wheel back into the frame dropouts and tighten
the chain tensioners such that the chain becomes tight and
the wheel is centered. *Tighten both the tensioners
simultaneously/ to equal length to avoid the wheel to be
installed incorrectly.
6. Tighten the axle nuts securely.

10 scolariAn www.scolarian.com
7. Spin the wheel to make sure the wheel is centered and
does not wobble. If it is not centered, loosen the nuts and
try again. A slight adjustment to the tensioners should do
the job.

Illustration: Rear Wheel Flip

Disclaimer:
1. When using the freewheel, it is highly advisable to use a Rear Brake also.
The rider is solely responsible for the decision of having a Rear Brake
fitted.
2. It is advisable to remove the tire and fix it again with the rotation
direction coinciding with the drive direction.

11 scolariAn www.scolarian.com
Brake Lever (Tool required: 5mm Allen Key)
1. Unscrew the clamp bolt completely and place the lever on
the handlebar near the grip end such that the clamp wraps
around the bar.
2. Place the bolt back through the clamp bolt hole. Make sure
the Hex bolt side of the clamp is facing downwards. If it is
not, then you have placed the lever on the wrong hand
side. Unclamp it and place it on the other hand side of the
bar. Fasten the bolt using a 5mm Allen Key to secure the
lever tightly on the bar.

Brake Caliper
The Brake Caliper can be adjusted at Two points, Adjustment
at the Anchor Bolt lets you adjust the brake lever travel and
adjustment at the Brake Shoe alignment bolt lets you align the
brake pads to the wheel braking zone.
Adjustment of Brake Lever Travel (Tool required: 5mm Allen Key):
1. Unscrew the Cable Anchor Nut and make sure that the
quick release lever is facing down.
2. Squeeze both sides of the brake shoes together towards
the rim and hold it in position. The closer you bring the
pads to the rim, the less lever travel you will get. Brake pad
clearance should be maximum 2mm from the rim.
12 scolariAn www.scolarian.com
3. After the satisfying adjustment position is reached and
held. Tighten the Anchor bolt. Again make sure that the
quick release lever is facing down.

Illustration: Brake Caliper Parts

Alignment of Brake Shoes (Tool required: 4mm Allen Key):

1. Loosen the Brake Shoe Alignment bolts.
2. Slide through the slots and adjust the brake shoes such
that the brake shoes get aligned to the braking zone of the
wheels. The brake shoe is said to be aligned when the
entire contact patch is perfectly inside the braking zone.
3. Tighten the bolts to secure the brake shoes in place.

SAFETY INFORMATION
Tires and Tubes
Check the sidewall of the tire for the correct tire pressure (PSI)
and inflate tires accordingly with a Manual Bicycle Pump. Due
to the slightly porous nature of a bicycle inner tube, it is
normal for your bike tires to lose pressure over time. For this
reason it is critically important to maintain the proper tire
inflation on your bike.
Check your tire pressure before every ride.
Your Scolarian Bike comes fitted with a standard Kenda KWEST
Tire which has a maximum tire pressure 110 psi.
WARNING! NEVER INFLATE A TIRE BEYOND THE MAXIMUM PRESSURE
MARKED ON THE TIRE’S SIDEWALL. EXCEEDING THE RECOMMENDED
MAXIMUM PRESSURE MAY LEAD TO THE TIRE BEING BURST OFF THE RIM,
WHICH COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE BIKE AND INJURY TO THE RIDER AND
OTHERS.THE BEST WAY TO INFLATE A BICYCLE TIRE TO THE CORRECT
PRESSURE IS WITH A BICYCLE PUMP. PETROL PUMP AIR HOSES MOVE LARGE
VOLUMES OF AIR VERY RAPIDLY, AND WILL RAISE THE PRESSURE IN YOUR
TIRE VERY RAPIDLY. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND USING PETROL PUMP AIR
HOSES.

Reflectors
Each Scolarian Bike is supplied with one front (White) and one
rear (Red) reflector. Apart from these, two wheel reflectors
14 scolariAn www.scolarian.com
(white) and four pedal (orange) reflectors come attached as
standard safety attachments. It is highly advisable to fit all of
these for your own safety. If not, please attach LED back lights
and use a good quality front torch.
