includes understanding Building Information Modelling (BIM).
Up to 150 members and guests are expected for the event, with the
meeting and conference hosted at the Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel,
Bradford followed by a dinner at the nearby Salts Mill – a UNESCO
world heritage site which is also home to one of the largest collections
of David Hockney’s art.
Recently Paul Morrell, the government’s construction adviser has said
BIM will be mandatory on public buildings over £5m in capital value.
BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the process of generating and
managing building data during its life cycle. The key to BIM is that the
project is drawn just once and forms a complex computer model. All
specialist trades then have access to the BIM and can offer detailed
design within the model. This method of design offers huge savings
and eliminates the possibility of design problems on site.
The mini-conference, which is preceded by a CAB marketing and technical update, will give members and their guests the opportunity to discuss and
question upcoming routes to specification and how BIM is going to affect the building industry in the UK.
Members are welcome to bring guests, should you wish to attend as a guest of CAB please contact the CAB offices. For further information about
CAB, its team and membership take a look at the Association’s website at www.c-a-b.org.uk or contact Julie Harley on 01453 828851.

Increased Durability For Architectural Aluminium

Through its network of members across the globe, Qualicoat continue to work closely with the developers of
powder systems, pre treatment systems and applicators to offer sustainable finishes for aluminium profiles.
Bringing all three processes together under one Quality label ensures that each element works perfectly
together. By prescribing ‘Qualicoat’ at tender stage, a specifier can be assured of a high quality and long lasting
finish.
Many current powder coat finishes can carry
guarantees of up to 30 years with given colour
and gloss retention variations. With regular
cleaning and minimal maintenance, the finish
will remain in place to protect the aluminium
whilst offering a lasting aesthetic appearance
on the building.
Polyester powder coat finishes offer the best
value for the building owner, whilst giving
good life expectancy when specifiers choose
to source their finishing from a Qualicoat
approved applicator. However, buildings being
constructed today are expected to last much longer, finishes are expected to last
longer with less maintenance, colours are expected to remain constant. All these issues
have a direct influence on the sustainability of a building.
So how does a specifier decide which coating is the most suitable for any given project? The Qualicoat organisation is based in Zurich with local
organisations located in many countries across the globe In the UK, the majority of architectural powder coaters are members of ‘Qualicoat UK &
Ireland’. Specifiers can contact Qualicoat’s offices in the UK, or any of its members to seek guidance on the correct specification to use for any given
application. Specifiers in the UK working on projects overseas can also specify Qualicoat in the safe knowledge that they are specifying a global
standard for powder coating quality. www.qualicoatuki.org

New Rooflights For The UK

New rooflights have been launched in the UK by ESSMANN,
one of Europe’s leading innovators and manufacturers
of daylighting systems for flat roofs. Designed to be
installed in continuous runs, they are suitable for both new
buildings and refurbishment to maximise daylighting and
save energy,
The new ESSMANN arcade rooflights i and ih feature
acrylic base profiles offering different levels of insulation.
Together with load absorbing blocks, these ensure thermal
separation and protection against condensation as well as
excellent load absorption and stability. The interior is also
screened to conceal the structure and provide an attractive homogeneous appearance.
The arcade rooflight glazing is made from polycarbonate web plates or a combination of different single glazing options, with skin thicknesses of up
to 32mm. The highest U value is obtained when incorporating AeroTech, the world’s lightest and most insulating translucent solid.
The rooflights can be manufactured to any width between 1 and 6m and of any length. They can also be equipped with ventilation or smoke and
heat extraction flaps, operated by electric or pneumatic control. This system not only improves the diffusion of natural daylight but, when used with
natural ventilation, creates a healthy working environment and reduces energy costs. www.essmann.co.uk

Title: Stannah – Xtralifting For New Academy
Location: Hammersmith Academy, West London
Application: Stannah Xtralift Passenger Lifts
Visit: www.stannahlifts.co.uk

Environments don’t come much busier than a brand-new, state-of-the-art secondary school in West
London – which is why Hammersmith Academy features two 13-person Stannah Xtralift passenger lifts
to help bring access between four floors for school personnel and mobility compromised users, including
students.

With circa 780 students, staff and visitors to cater for on a daily basis, democratic movement between all
facilities is vital for this non-denominational, all-ability, co-educational school and 6th form specialising
in Creative and Digital Media and IT.

Operating over a distance of 13.2m each, the lifts feature plasticised,

light-grey walls, ‘Domino’ suspended, downlighter-effect ceilings, and
stainless-steel consoles, skirtings and car doors. Door-size graphics
– G-1-2-3 – printed on the external lift doors make the lifts easily
located at each floor; and swipe-card access ensures that they can
only be accessed by card-carrying users.

The Xtralifts were specified by Nathan Beevers, Associate of BHM

Associates, a London architect practice with a pedigree in designing
Academies: “As with all such projects, Hammersmith Academy
demonstrates our response to the physical and emotional demands
of the environment. In both product and performance, Stannah
has supported this ethos and made a significant contribution to
the efficiency and good health of the school. Having used Stannah
on numerous projects we knew they would perform well from initial
consultation to installation, commissioning and after-care.”

Stannah’s Xtralift range is designed for busy surroundings to carry more people a little faster and a little
higher. A super-efficient, oil- and vibration-free, gearless traction drive ensures a smooth ride with low
noise, energy use and running costs. Compact controls located at the top of the shaft save space; and
fast, efficient installation is ensured by a modular structure and unique rail system giving precision,
durability and reliability.

Available in models up to 33 persons, with many features, finishes and options, Xtralifts comply with EN
81-1, CE marked and in full compliance with The Lift Directive 95/16/EC; and ensure that Hammersmith
Academy’s owners meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010.

The Xtralifts are serviced by the London and South East branch of Stannah Lifts Services, a nationwide

Title: Challenging Roof-Top Extension To Cardiac Catheterisation Unit Delivered On Time And On Budget At Lister Hospital
Location: Lister Hospital, Stevenage
Application: 24-module extension
Visit: www.yorkon.info

Award-winning off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has delivered a challenging project

to double capacity of the cardiac catheterisation unit at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, on
time and on budget – its second project at the hospital for East and North Hertfordshire
NHS Trust.

This involved adding a new storey on to the roof of the existing unit that was provided
by Yorkon in 2004, which has doubled the size of these life-saving heart facilities, and
represents a significant £4.5m investment in service delivery for the Trust.

The project was phased to maintain use of the existing facility throughout and to keep any
disruption to service provision during the construction works to an absolute minimum.

The 24-module extension was installed using a 350-tonne crane and the operation was
carried out over a weekend to further reduce any inconvenience to staff and patients.
The project also included changes to patient flows and extensive reconfiguration works
to the existing laboratory suite, as well as the provision of stairs, lift, and an adjacent
modular corridor.

The building has provided a range of purpose-designed facilities including a second

catheterisation laboratory, clinical support areas, control room, preparation and recovery
rooms, consulting and examination suites, offices, reception and waiting area.

Commenting on the project, Manu Shah, Lead Capital Project Manager for the scheme
at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, said, “This was a complex project and Yorkon
performed very well throughout. The installation phase went smoothly and the building
was completed to the high standards expected by the Trust. The expanded facility has
been welcomed by both clinicians and patients who are benefiting from a building that
has been specifically designed for this service.”

“Speed of construction was a key issue for the Trust in order to have the new facility
up and running as quickly as possible. The Yorkon off-site approach is much faster than
traditional site-based building methods. It also requires much less space for construction,
which was critical on this site as the cardiac unit is almost fully enclosed by other
buildings so there was little room for the storage of materials, plant and equipment.”

“The second cardiac laboratory suite is now enabling us to provide life-saving cardiac
services locally to more people.”

By expanding both the unit’s capacity and the range of cardiac services available at
Lister Hospital, far fewer people need to travel to other hospitals for specialist cardiology
treatment. It has also increased efficiency, with better care being provided for patients
needing help in an emergency, as well as those with planned treatments.

The roof-top extension was installed with partitions, mechanical and electrical services,
windows and doors already in place to reduce time on site by around 50 per cent. It is
targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ environmental rating. Yorkon is part of the
Portakabin Group.

Title: Hauraton Drainage At Teesport Container Terminal 2
Location: The Teesport Container Terminals
Application: RECYFIX® HICAP® High Capacity Drainage Channels, Gullies And Access Points
Visit: www.hauraton.co.uk

The Teesport Container Terminals are a purpose built, multi million pound facilities owned
and operated by PD Ports. The terminals are located on the South bank of the river Tees
and part of the Northern Gateway Container Terminal development. Completed in Autumn
2011, Teesport Container Terminal 2 – expansion phase 1, increases capacity to 450,000
TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit), from its current 235,000 TEU - an investment of more
than £15million.

The port’s overall strategy is to expand port wide capacity, including Ro-Ro traffic, to at
least 650,000 TEU, which will position Teesport as a major player in the container market.

County Durham based Hall Construction Services Ltd successfully won the design & build
tender to carry out the civil engineering works at the Container Terminal. The works
involved the complete reconstruction of the terminal with a new heavy duty concrete
standing area designed to resist the massive loads imposed by the container stacks. New
cranes and heavy handling equipment was also purchased as part of the project.

As the Terminal’s concreted area is over six hectares, effective surface water drainage was
a major consideration to ensure efficient all-weather operation.

Designed to resist the rigours of site work, two sizes of Hauraton channel were installed.
44 metres of RECYFIX® HICAP® 200 and 840 metres of HICAP® 680 installed in two
runs. Hall Construction Project Manager commented, “Each one metre unit was easily
manipulated into position on site and no channel breakages were reported during the
installation process”. To further reduce installation times, end-of-run caps and pipe
connection sockets were also supplied with other connection points moulded into the
sides and bottom of each channel. This was a major advantage for the contractor as it
helped speed the completion of the project.

Factory fitted with 14mm slotted ductile iron inlets, the channels comply with a loading
class of F900 so can easily take the weight of a lifting truck with a fully laden container.
Importantly, once installed the complete system is highly resilient to the twisting forces
imposed by the wheeled vehicles employed.

The RECYFIX® HICAP® 200 one metre channels used each have a water capacity of 79.0
litres whilst the HICAP® 680 units have a massive 443 litre capacity. The whole channel
system installed at Teesport Container Terminal 2 is able to accept a volume of water of
375,596 litres.

A RECYFIX® HICAP® Gully and Access point, also made from 100% recycled PE-PP, were
installed at each end of the HICAP® 200 run which were laid in a curve along the service
road. Large concrete rings were used as gullies and access points for the HICAP® 680
units.

Colin Taff, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments about the project, “We are pleased that
this phase of the Teesport project has been such a success and we are delighted to have
contributed to its rapid build progress”.

Patio Life – Take A Panoramic View

Building designers wishing to make the most of impressive scenery
or landscape views can now take advantage of Roto’s Patio Life
sliding door system. This unique hardware suite enables very large
glass sizes, filling rooms with natural light whilst at the same time
making remarkably easy work of sliding large, heavy door sashes.
Patio Life is the next step on from a ‘lift and slide’ system. The Roto
product negates the need for the ‘lift’ element with its mechanism
that moves the gaskets in order to make the seal.
The result is sliding doors whose ease of use belies their weight –
up to 400 kg. Sashes containing glazed units over 3 metres wide
are possible.
The threshold offers excellent thermal insulation, resulting in U-values low enough for the system to have been specified in
Passive House projects. Roto has also introduced a new low-profile threshold to comply with Part M of the Building Regulations.
Another unique advantage is ventilation with full security: the vent mode allows airflow when the sash is fully closed and locked.
Various design schemes are possible and the hardware is suitable for door sets made from timber or other composite materials.
Roto offers compliance with the latest EN standards for corrosion protection and a 10 year warranty. www.roto.co.uk

Skyfold Vertical-Folding Partition System

Installed At New Council Offices
The newly-constructed headquarters for Melton Borough Council
includes a modern suite available for community events.
Maximising use of the space, Style was commissioned to install
two Skyfold automatic, vertical-folding partitions allowing the
area to be quickly reconfigured from a single function room into
three separate facilities. Style’s expertise and careful attention
to detail at the installation stage, coupled with Skyfold’s unique
design criteria, delivers a system that offers superior acoustic
performance of up to Rw56dB. The exceptional privacy levels
achieved for all users of the suite is unsurpassed by conventional moveable partitions.
Aiming for a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating, Melton’s new council office is an environmentally friendly, bright, clean and energy efficient building.
Customers benefit from a range of accessible, co-ordinated services provided not only by the Borough Council but from a range of other public bodies
who also occupy the space based on neighbourhoods, in a fully flexible working environment.
Style was introduced to the project by architects, Archial and contractor, Hallam Contracts, to propose a solution that would allow the function suite
to be utilised to maximum effect. The Skyfolds do not take up any valuable floor space when not in use. Instead they are neatly housed within the
ceiling cavity, being automatically raised and lowered through a simple turnkey operation. www.style-partitions.co.uk
