Recently Paul Morrell, the government’s construction adviser has said
BIM will be mandatory on public buildings over £5m in capital value.
BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the process of generating and
managing building data during its life cycle. The key to BIM is that the
project is drawn just once and forms a complex computer model. All
specialist trades then have access to the BIM and can offer detailed
design within the model. This method of design offers huge savings
and eliminates the possibility of design problems on site.
The mini-conference, which is preceded by a CAB marketing and technical update, will give members and their guests the opportunity to discuss and
question upcoming routes to specification and how BIM is going to affect the building industry in the UK.

New Rooflights For The UK

New rooflights have been launched in the UK by ESSMANN,
one of Europe’s leading innovators and manufacturers

The arcade rooflight glazing is made from polycarbonate web plates or a combination of different single glazing options, with skin thicknesses of up

Castle has just received a £5.5 million facelift helped
by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Dryseal

Riverside, one of the leading social housing and regeneration organisations in England, has re-roofed 404 properties on
the Botcherby Estate in Carlisle using Sandtoft’s Olympus, Rivius and Modula clay roof tiles. The new roofs form part of a
refurbishment which has seen the external envelope of each house transformed with new fascias, gutters, rendered panels and
canopies.
Built around 75 years’ ago, the houses are located on an estate which has changed dramatically over the last few years as
a result of a multi million pound neighbourhood revitalisation investment by Riverside. The properties featuring Sandtoft’s
products are spread over three different streets in Botcherby and originally featured Gaelic clay tiles.
As well as supplying roof tiles, Sandtoft worked closely with the contractors and Riverside to develop a roofing specification
that required no mortar. This included the use of dry valleys and bonding gutters as well as Koratech, a vapour permeable
membrane which unlike traditional Bitumen underlay, helps to prevent condensation in the roof space.
John Robinson, Asset Investment Manager from Riverside said: “We were considering reusing the Gaelic tiles until we were
shown the Olympus clay double pantile and realised the cost savings that could be achieved. The dry fixing system was also a
major benefit as it could be fitted in any weather ensuring that the construction programme wasn’t delayed.
“We used the Olympus clay double pantile on one of the streets and the Modula and the Rivius on a further two roads.
Overall, the appearance of the properties in all three areas is very pleasing and the estate looks considerably better and
more modern. We have received numerous compliments about the estate which has changed from a place where houses were
difficult to let, to one which has a waiting list of potential tenants.
The Olympus, Rivius and Modula tiles are part of Sandtoft’s New Generation range. Each tile in the range has been designed
to make a natural clay roof more affordable as a result of an innovative design that significantly reduces installation costs.
Approximately 10 tiles are required per square metre, resulting in a covering capacity that matches the largest concrete tiles.
In addition, an open gauge means there is no need for cutting at the eaves and ridge making the tiles quick and easy to lay.
Andrew Lawton, Sandtoft’s sales director added: “The Botcherby project was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the
variety and adaptability of our New Generation range and dry system capability. Working in close partnership with Riverside
we were able to dramatically reduce their costs and create a long-term solution with a lasting impression.”

Environments don’t come much busier than a brand-new, state-of-the-art secondary school in West
London – which is why Hammersmith Academy features two 13-person Stannah Xtralift passenger lifts

Award-winning off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, has delivered a challenging project

to double capacity of the cardiac catheterisation unit at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, on
time and on budget – its second project at the hospital for East and North Hertfordshire
NHS Trust.

This involved adding a new storey on to the roof of the existing unit that was provided
by Yorkon in 2004, which has doubled the size of these life-saving heart facilities, and
represents a significant £4.5m investment in service delivery for the Trust.

The project was phased to maintain use of the existing facility throughout and to keep any
disruption to service provision during the construction works to an absolute minimum.

The 24-module extension was installed using a 350-tonne crane and the operation was
carried out over a weekend to further reduce any inconvenience to staff and patients.
The project also included changes to patient flows and extensive reconfiguration works
to the existing laboratory suite, as well as the provision of stairs, lift, and an adjacent
modular corridor.

The building has provided a range of purpose-designed facilities including a second

catheterisation laboratory, clinical support areas, control room, preparation and recovery
rooms, consulting and examination suites, offices, reception and waiting area.

Commenting on the project, Manu Shah, Lead Capital Project Manager for the scheme
at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, said, “This was a complex project and Yorkon
performed very well throughout. The installation phase went smoothly and the building
was completed to the high standards expected by the Trust. The expanded facility has
been welcomed by both clinicians and patients who are benefiting from a building that
has been specifically designed for this service.”

“Speed of construction was a key issue for the Trust in order to have the new facility
up and running as quickly as possible. The Yorkon off-site approach is much faster than
traditional site-based building methods. It also requires much less space for construction,
which was critical on this site as the cardiac unit is almost fully enclosed by other
buildings so there was little room for the storage of materials, plant and equipment.”

“The second cardiac laboratory suite is now enabling us to provide life-saving cardiac
services locally to more people.”

By expanding both the unit’s capacity and the range of cardiac services available at
Lister Hospital, far fewer people need to travel to other hospitals for specialist cardiology
treatment. It has also increased efficiency, with better care being provided for patients
needing help in an emergency, as well as those with planned treatments.

The roof-top extension was installed with partitions, mechanical and electrical services,
windows and doors already in place to reduce time on site by around 50 per cent. It is
targeted to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ environmental rating. Yorkon is part of the
Portakabin Group.

The Teesport Container Terminals are a purpose built, multi million pound facilities owned
and operated by PD Ports. The terminals are located on the South bank of the river Tees
and part of the Northern Gateway Container Terminal development. Completed in Autumn
2011, Teesport Container Terminal 2 – expansion phase 1, increases capacity to 450,000
TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit), from its current 235,000 TEU - an investment of more
than £15million.

The port’s overall strategy is to expand port wide capacity, including Ro-Ro traffic, to at
least 650,000 TEU, which will position Teesport as a major player in the container market.

County Durham based Hall Construction Services Ltd successfully won the design & build
tender to carry out the civil engineering works at the Container Terminal. The works
involved the complete reconstruction of the terminal with a new heavy duty concrete
standing area designed to resist the massive loads imposed by the container stacks. New
cranes and heavy handling equipment was also purchased as part of the project.

As the Terminal’s concreted area is over six hectares, effective surface water drainage was
a major consideration to ensure efficient all-weather operation.

Designed to resist the rigours of site work, two sizes of Hauraton channel were installed.
44 metres of RECYFIX® HICAP® 200 and 840 metres of HICAP® 680 installed in two
runs. Hall Construction Project Manager commented, “Each one metre unit was easily
manipulated into position on site and no channel breakages were reported during the
installation process”. To further reduce installation times, end-of-run caps and pipe
connection sockets were also supplied with other connection points moulded into the
sides and bottom of each channel. This was a major advantage for the contractor as it
helped speed the completion of the project.

Factory fitted with 14mm slotted ductile iron inlets, the channels comply with a loading
class of F900 so can easily take the weight of a lifting truck with a fully laden container.
Importantly, once installed the complete system is highly resilient to the twisting forces
imposed by the wheeled vehicles employed.

The RECYFIX® HICAP® 200 one metre channels used each have a water capacity of 79.0
litres whilst the HICAP® 680 units have a massive 443 litre capacity. The whole channel
system installed at Teesport Container Terminal 2 is able to accept a volume of water of
375,596 litres.

A RECYFIX® HICAP® Gully and Access point, also made from 100% recycled PE-PP, were
installed at each end of the HICAP® 200 run which were laid in a curve along the service
road. Large concrete rings were used as gullies and access points for the HICAP® 680
units.

The stunning new headquarters building for KfW Bank in Frankfurt, which features
extensive use of Wicona unitised curtain walling, has won a major global architectural
award.
The prestigious accolade for the World’s Best Tall Building has been awarded to
the KfW project by the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) – the
leading international authority on the design, construction and development of tall
buildings.
This is the second time the CTBUH has recognised a Wicona project. In 2009 the
Tornado Tower in Doha, another application of Wicona unitised curtain walling, was
presented with the award for the Best Tall Building in the Middle East.
The CTBUH awards highlight projects from across the world that have made
‘extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban
environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level’.
Described as a ‘remarkable building’, the $85m KfW scheme was designed by
architects Sauerbruch Hutton to combine form, colour and sustainability. With a
primary energy consumption of just 98kWh/m2, it is also one of the world’s most
sustainable office buildings.

The building, known as Westarkade, provides office space for 700
staff and a conference centre. Its base is a curved four-storey
podium connected to the bank’s adjacent buildings on several
levels. A 10-storey tower rises above the podium in a ‘flowing’
form that responds to the prevailing wind direction and orientation
of the sun, maximising natural day light and achieving the best
possible views for the occupants of the neighbouring KfW buildings.
The scheme’s most distinctive feature is its bespoke double skin
façade constructed using Wicona’s aluminium unitised curtain
walling.
The envelope consists of an
encircling ‘sawtooth-shaped
cavity’ which encloses automated
blinds to reduce solar gain
and control glare. The exterior
is defined by a skin of fixed
tempered glass panels and
colourful ventilation ‘flaps’ in red,
blue and green, helping to create
a striking aesthetic. The internal
façade has alternating opening
and fixed glazed units.
This dynamic façade solution
negates the effect of variable
pressures around the building,
allowing natural ventilation all year round and for the occupiers to
open the windows on the inner skin whilst avoiding both draughts
and heat loss.
A roof-mounted weather station linked to the building management
system monitors wind speed and direction, and controls the
façade’s outer ventilation flaps. This solution introduces fresh air
when required and creates a zone of constant pressure surrounding
the inner skin of curtain walling. Air can then be drawn into the
offices via floor vents or the occupier-controlled windows.
Commenting on the award, Peter Murray, one of the CTBUH judges,
said, “The streamlined form of the building integrates itself into its
surrounding context, whilst simultaneously standing out through
the playful use of colour. Whereas many buildings use colour as a
way to mask an otherwise unremarkable building, here it contributes
an additional rich layer to what is already a remarkable building.”
KfW is one of the largest banks in Germany and is at the forefront
of the country’s demanding energy policies. It was therefore a key
project requirement to develop a highly sustainable office building
for its headquarters expansion.
Wicona offers one of the most widely used and technically
advanced unitised façades in Europe, which is particularly suited
to high rise, complex and bespoke façade designs. The panels can
accommodate any combination of profiles, external feature caps
and glazing, and can carry stone cladding; metal, composite or
polycarbonate panels; windows, doors and fixed light glazing; brise
soleil sunshading and photovoltaic panels.

yet more bathrooms, for the second series of her
popular Restoration Nightmare peak-time series.
This time, the kitchen & bathroom surfaces
specialist supplied and fitted materials for four
more interiors, bringing the total number of Rise
Hall installations to eight. The massive restoration
project is still ongoing and Sarah is so impressed
with the looks and performance of the reconstituted
granite and recycled glass finishes that she is
already talking about using Granite Transformations
for fitting out a further four bathrooms.
The second series of the top rating Channel 4 makeover show ran through October
and November 2011 and featured Sarah and her husband Graham Swift continuing
their battle to breathe new life into their listed 97-room mansion in Yorkshire.
It focused on the couple’s endeavours to restore several bedrooms and all the
main state rooms, together with washing spaces and bathrooms, with Sarah
emphasising the need for fittings ‘to last another hundred years’, as much as
bringing renewed decorative style to jaded 19th century interiors.
One particular Rise Hall makeover project, in which Granite Transformations
was closely involved, has already introduced a striking ‘wow factor’ for visitors:
the emerald green bathroom serving the Tepilo Suite features its Dream Green
recycled glass and the backlit bath panel presents a truly eyecatching, bejewelled
appearance that is visible the length of the adjoining corridor. In contrast, the
Millenium bridal suite, with its refined Palm Desert quartz panelling on the boxed-
in bath, whimsical ‘thunderbox’ and twin wash stations, is notable for its subtle
colourways and restrained elegance.
Granite Transformations’ Chief Operating Officer, Danny Hanlon, visited Rise
Hall once again recently, on the same day as an Hello magazine photoshoot,
and renewed his firm’s ongoing commitment to Sarah and Graham’s extensive
makeover programme.
“It’s an enormous and quite daunting project, but you can already see the massive
transformation that’s taken place,” says Danny. “We’re delighted to be involved

in a modest way, as it provides opportunities for employing our agglomerate
materials in settings other than simply kitchens. Drawing upon Graham’s artistic
talent and Sarah’s undoubted design know-how, they have managed to style
and theme each room individually, enabling us to showcase a number of quite
different colours and finishes, including some rarities from our back catalogue.”
Other Granite Transformations highlights at Rise Hall include a dramatic Black Star
shower room in the Stable Wing, from series one, as well as copper, brown and
black Mocha Real wall cladding and flooring in the Farndale bathroom and Nero
Stella black granite bath cut-out and extensive splashbacks in the Holderness
Suite, both of which were featured in series two.
The installations were all carried out by skilled fitters from Granite Transformations’
head office in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and, in common with all of the brand’s
domestic customers, Sarah and Graham will enjoy a lifetime material warranty.
The same fitters have also worked on other networked TV shows like ITV’s 60
Minute Makeover and BBC’s DIY SOS, so are familiar with the demands of filming
schedules; while the material lends itself perfectly to ‘instant makeover’ projects,
being tough, slimline, lightweight and able to fit neatly over most existing
surfaces, with beautiful and lasting results.
Most of the luxurious finishes featured at Rise Hall are available through Granite
Transformations showrooms around the country and, just like on TV makeover
shows, its highly qualified installers will measure up and fit new worktop counters,
bathroom cladding, shower linings and other refinishing surfaces, mostly in a
single day.
As the current series of Beeny’s Restoration Nightmare came to a close, doubts

issues. But Sarah tells Danny that they have now received the necessary venue
licence for staging weddings and the bookings are coming in thick and fast, so

The framework agreement simplifies the procurement process for publicly-funded

framework, customers selecting Portakabin will benefit from rapid procurement
and cost-effective modular building solutions, avoiding costly, compulsory
competitive tendering.
Government Procurement Service is the largest professional buying organisation in
the public sector and the only body with a legal remit to trade across the whole of
the public sector. In the past year, it managed £7.6bn of customer spend through
its procurement arrangements and services, working with 14,500 customers across
1,400 organisations in central Government, health, education, local government
and other areas.
This latest framework follows a rigorous, independent assessment of the buildings
and services offered by Portakabin, including its assurance of supply, quality
management procedures, regulatory compliance, innovation and cost.
The new framework agreement with Portakabin includes the supply of modular
buildings for both sales and hire, and for applications such as offices, kitchens
and restaurants, education facilities for nursery, primary, secondary and further
education, and in the healthcare sector, buildings for consultation, patient
accommodation and operating theatres.

Commenting on the new agreement, Robert Snook, Director and General Manager of

Pioneering Children's Centre
Laidlaw Solutions’ Orbis anti-ligature door furniture has
been used for both external and internal doors at the
£27M Ferndene Children and Young People's Centre in
Prudhoe. Ferndene is the latest Northumberland Tyne and
Wear NHS Foundation Trust project in which Laidlaw has
worked alongside healthcare design specialists Medical
Architecture. The range was specified in keeping with
the brief to create modern, safe facilities in which the
dignity of patients was paramount. Ferndene is the
first facility in the UK to provide four separate services
under one roof including provision of mental health and
learning disability services for 8-18 year olds. It has a

Glazing expert Cantifix has started the year with a focus on collaboration;
by launching a range of events designed to help architects get maximum
benefit from the innovative possibilities of architectural glazing.
First Tuesdays – consult, collaborate and create
First Tuesdays are a new initiative developed to share knowledge, help
architects and clients achieve their creative vision, and encourage
collaborative detailing. Cantifix has allocated a dedicated space in its
showroom where architects can book in and visit on the first Tuesday of
every month, for free, no-obligation glazing advice; help with detailing
and specification; and inspiration. First Tuesdays will be launching on 7th
February, and is open to all by appointment.
Glass as a construction material
Alongside First Tuesdays, Cantifix will be running regular in-house CPD
brunches throughout the year – with the first of these on 20th March at
10am. The seminar is entitled ‘Glass as a construction material’ and provides
a wealth of expert glazing knowledge – running right through from a brief
history of glass in construction, to the latest technological advances in glass

about structural and innovative glazing. Cantifix director Charlie Sharman

As many architects are aware, roofing slate is available in both natural
and man-made varieties. In order to make the most suitable choice for
a particular project, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the
unique qualities of both, as well as the kinds of application for which each
is best suited.
The natural choice?
Natural slate is a traditional building material, with a heritage that goes back
to Roman times. It offers a fantastic combination of aesthetic appeal and
exceptional durability. Natural slate can become a major contributory factor
in a building’s whole life costs, which is important since environmental
issues are moving to the forefront in all areas of construction. A well laid
slate roof will enhance any building and give problem free protection for the
lifetime of the building. However, natural slate also satisfies on that other
buzzword so common throughout product specification – sustainability! As
well as lasting the lifetime of the building, natural slate can be salvaged
and re-used. In fact, reclaiming natural slate for roofing and cladding has
been common practice since the middle of the last century, with worked

stone recognised as a valuable building material for many hundreds of
years, as it is today. Natural slate, tested to BS EN 12326 Part I and
meeting the highest relevant ratings will be unaffected by normal extremes
of temperature, and highly resistant to acids, alkalis and other chemicals.
This means that it is resistant to acid rain and atmospheres that contain
sulphur dioxide, whereas man-made products commonly discolour due to
weathering or the growth of lichens (although surface coatings can delay
this process).
Natural slate often respects the traditional or local character where it is
used and, as a natural product, features variations in colours, sizes and
textures. This is especially important in conservation areas, where slate
selection must match existing roofing materials on surrounding buildings.
Historically, slates were from a local source which means that usually there
is a ‘type’ of roofing material particular to a location. However, nowadays
with more quarries available worldwide, suitable alternatives can be found
to match most British origin slates found on roofs throughout the country.

NIBE Ground Sourced Heat For Cowper Farm Cottage

During a recent conversion, a delightful two bedroomed cottage at Cowper
House Farm was totally refurbished and transformed with the addition of a two
bedroom extension, living room and a conservatory at the rear. At the planning
stage the owners decided to install central heating from a renewable source
and, as a further way of conserving energy, converted the existing 9” brickwork
to a cavity wall construction. Steven Bowes Building & Roofing Contractor of
Darlington, who carried
out the conversion work,
called on HT Energy Ltd,
another local company
based in Swainby, to
design a suitably eco-
friendly heating system.
Since the cottage has a
large open area to the
rear, HT Energy devised
a ground sourced system
involving the burial
of some 500 metres of
ground looped plastic
piping at a depth just below the frost level, around one metre in the cold
North Country. Filled with an anti-freeze solution, the pipe is linked to a NIBE
F1245 8kW Heat Pump handily sited in the double garage near the cottage’s
back door. The solution is warmed by the solar warmth permanently stored in
the soil and is passed through to the heat pump where it is harvested into the
pump’s closed system containing a refrigerant that converts liquid to gas at
a comparatively low temperature. Passing through the pump’s highly efficient
compressor very sharply raises the temperature before a condenser is employed
so that the resulting heat can be passed into the super-insulated hot water
cylinder (situated beside the heat pump) ready for use. The F1245, one of
NIBE’s new generation of pumps, is one of the most efficient on the market and
as well as generating maximum heat it also cuts CO2 emissions to an absolute
minimum.
HT Energy, a NIBE registered VIP installer, linked the unit into the under-floor
heating system on the ground floor and to the radiator heating on the first
floor and the heat pump will also supply the domestic hot water requirements
of the entire house. The F1245 heat pump is contained in a nicely styled unit
only 1800 x 600 x 625mm in size with exceptionally clear and easily accessed
controls. The unit incorporates an immersion heater in case of exceptional
hot water demand coinciding with peak central heating usage but experience
indicates that it is unlikely to be required. Steven Bowes, main contractor for
the conversion was delighted at the ease and rapidity with which the ground

Solarpack [UK] Ltd, based in Rochester in Kent, is a company specialising in preparing solar packages made up

in the Solar River [SR] series, is extremely efficient, reliable and flexible in use.
The components of the Solarpack system were chosen on site in consultation with the owner of the property in
Falklands Place and fitted by Ball Contractors of Ashford, who were impressed by the ease of installation. The
owner is delighted with his solar package, which is fully living up to his high expectations at the design stage.

folding shutters to the room side of the bedrooms but this combination did
not provide the required level of noise insulation. To remedy this, Selectaglaze
provided sliding secondary units fitted flush to the window openings, thus
allowing easy access to the shutters and external windows. This has not only
produced exceptionally quiet rooms but will help considerably in reducing
energy consumption.
Hotel Indigo located in The Minories, on the edge of the Square Mile within
the capital’s main financial district, is a four star hotel, part of the word-
wide InterContinental Hotels Group. The Indigo brand launched in America in
2004 and arrived in the UK four years later. The new hotel in The Minories is
the latest in what is now a 38 strong world-wide chain. Each Hotel Indigo is
unique and designed to reflect the local culture, character and geography of
the surrounding area.
Occupying what was formerly an office building and bank, conversion to a
top class boutique hotel and restaurant was a major architectural and interior
design undertaking. As part of the conversion it was decided to replace the
windows with double glazed frames but standard double glazing does not
provide the levels of sound insulation needed by the guests. The solution was
to install secondary glazing, thus creating triple-glazing which offered noise
insulation in excess of 45dB and further improved the energy performance of
the window, reducing heating costs and improving sustainability.
The secondary windows were made bespoke to ensure the best fit and included
horizontal sliding, vertical sliding and hinged casements all finished in a grey
powder paint to blend with the new external windows.

BBES Begins Major M&E Installation At £13.7M Tollcross Aquatics Centre
Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has commenced the £2 million
M&E supply and installation contract at the extension of Tollcross Aquatics
Centre in Glasgow. Set to host swimming competitions at the Glasgow 2014
Commonwealth Games, the project is being delivered sustainably in line
with the lasting legacy of hosting the Games.
The UK’s leading provider of mechanical and electrical services, BBES,
is working with main contractor Barr Construction to deliver the £13.7
million project for Glasgow City Council. BBES will supply and install M&E
services for the building’s extension which includes the creation of a new
six lane, 50m warm up pool, an additional 1,000 permanent seats and the
incorporation of a further 3,000 temporary seats for the duration of the
Games.
The building services design includes a number of sustainable elements.
This includes a combined heat and power (CHP) unit and a rainwater
harvesting system. Other M&E services being installed by BBES on the
project include LV switchgear and distribution, lighting, emergency
lighting, lighting controls, small power, fire alarms, public address, voice/
IT, TV and ventilation systems, BMS system, heating and domestic water
services.

Using lean manufacturing processes and off-site fabrication, BBES will
be delivering improved safety as well as sustainability throughout the
installation. Using these techniques for the delivery of the project’s high
level areas will enable BBES to greatly reduce the need for on site working
at height. The approach will also reduce hot works whilst minimising waste.
As part of BBES’ commitment to deliver the scheme sustainably, the project
is being supported by a local supply chain and through the use of local
subcontractors and suppliers. BBES is also committed to the use of “The

Set to reopen in the spring of 2013, the new Tollcross Aquatics Centre
will house two 50 metre swimming pools, a large gymnasium with more

permanent recreational facility for the local community while continuing to
offer world class facilities for the hosting of major swimming competitions

On Dorset’s spectacular Jurassic Coast, The Freshwater Holiday Park
near Bridport is proving to be no dinosaur and is setting itself
apart from other campsites with a brand new £3.5 million leisure
complex. The design had to incorporate insulation versatile enough to
withstand the dramatically changing weather and climate conditions.

concrete floors. Made from PIR (polyisocyanurate) with foil facers for
improved emissivity, Celotex CW4000 achieves an excellent lambda of
0.022W/mK, helping the project meet the desired U-values. Celotex
provided 100mm thick CW4000 for the cavity block walls of the steel
framed building. To insulate the floor and to avoid loss of heat,
50mm thick Celotex GA4000 was laid on the structural base then

Dementia Care Centre
A £3.5M scheme to provide accommodation for those with early stage
dementia has seen Klober’s Wallint 50 Air Barrier used with Solar-Line
airtightness accessories. The residential wing has been built to CSH Level
4 and the non-residential area to a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. Phil Goffin
of Brown Smith Baker explained, “We wanted an air barrier/VCL to meet a
minimum vapour resistance of 250 MN/sg provided by Wallint 50. It was
installed on the warm side of rafters behind plaster stops in conjunction
with Klober’s Pasto Sealant and Permo TR Tape. Pipe work penetrations

Hingham Primary School Are Proud Owners
Of Their Honka Log Building From Logwise
Logwise Ltd, the official agents for Honkarakenne Oyj (Honka) in
the UK have recently supplied a bespoke log building for Hingham
Primary School in Norfolk.
Timberville Ltd, who are the Logwise agents in East Anglia, were
originally approached by a local village school in Cromer that
wanted to replace their tired old mobile unit with a new log cabin
to be used as a pre-school building. Logwise were provided with a
concept plan for the building which was altered and amended by
their Honka trained designer. The new design proved so popular
that Norfolk County Council Education Department enquired about
5 such buildings.
Hingham Primary School in the south of Norfolk are now the proud
owners of their Honka log building for the playgroup. The building itself has been constructed from one of Honka's laminated logs at 112mm wide.
There is an additional insulation wall structure with Warmcel recycled newspaper insulation which helps to ensure the building is as sustainable
as possible. Construction was carried out by one of the Finnish teams that Logwise operate around the country, under the supervision of the main
contractors T Gill & Sons from Norwich. Speed of build was one of the deciding factors for Norfolk Property Services in choosing Logwise to supply

Encasement Column Casings Feature At

New Blackpool Health Centre
The innovative Moor Park Health Centre in Blackpool, which combines primary care
medical facilities and a state of the art fitness centre in the same building, is using
a range of column casings from Encasement to conceal structural columns, including
a unique seven metre high elliptical casing which is a key feature in the main
entrance foyer.
The recently opened £15 million centre not only brings together three GP surgery
practices, originally located on separate sites, but also houses a new 44 station gym
and fitness centre alongside an existing swimming pool and a new extensive ground
floor library. Encasement supplied 26 Circa pre-formed plywood column casings to
the project, together with the custom made elliptical Polyma GRP casing used at the
main entrance.
Finished in a high gloss white and measuring 1.8m x 0.4m, the elliptical casing is
extremely durable and resistant to damage, yet provides a striking aesthetic feature
to Moor Park’s spacious reception area while complementing the contemporary
design, which also incorporates hanging sculptures and a mural.
Encasement’s Circa plywood casings, which are a combination of 350mm and 450mm
diameter units, are finished in a highly durable white laminate with contrasting low
level skirting detail and are used on the ground floor health and fitness centre as
well as the first floor GP surgery practices in the consulting room waiting areas.

Medite Tricoya Opens Doors As The ‘Perfect Product’
AMS Joinery of Maidstone has been working on a Victorian town house in
Notting Hill in London which has undergone a full refurbishment to bring
the property back to its former glory. As the new home of a London property
developer, the owner had specific designs in mind intended to retain as
much of the property’s period feel as possible. One of AMS Joinery’s tasks
was to manufacture and install a large No. 10
Downing Street-style front door to the newly
renovated property; a job for which the stability
and durability of new Medite Tricoya MDF, the
ground-breaking new panel product from a joint
development agreement with Medite Europe &
Accsys Technologies.
Darren Smith, AMS Joinery’s workshop foreman,
said, “Front door panels of this size can have
issues including splitting and the necessary
subsequent repair, and we were looking for an
alternative which would enable us to create
a perfect and durable product first time. We
became aware of Medite’s new MDF Medite
Tricoya around the time of its launch at Timber
Expo in September and it was clearly developed for a good reason. It doesn’t
move, it easily handles wet environments without change and has proved to
be the perfect product for us.”
AMS Joinery found that Medite Tricoya machined cleanly to an impressively
high standard. The chosen finish for the door was a black gloss polyester spray,
which gave it a smooth gloss finish with no brush marks. Mr. Smith concluded,
“It’s a more expensive product, but the value and benefits of Medite Tricoya
save so many potential problems, including repair and re-manufacture. It is
well worth it, both for us and our clients and we’ve already taken more orders
from customers for which we will use Medite Tricoya.”
Medite Tricoya has been demonstrated to have superior dimensional stability
and durability, even in changing weather conditions, meaning it can now be
used in situations and applications where wood and wood-based products
would not usually be considered.
Extensive performance testing has been carried out by the Building Research
Establishment (BRE) in the UK concluded that Medite Tricoya would carry a
durability class (under EN350-2) of 1, or very durable; a durability equivalent
to teak and more durable than oak. BRE concluded that Medite Tricoya could
meet demands for a desired service life of 60 years when used in exterior
applications. Such is the confidence of Medite with this new product that it
carries a 50 year warranty.
