Proposal 1: Introduction to Film – One week

Course aims: In this one-week course you will be introduced to the history and evolution of
modern cinema, and to the key concepts and ideas in film studies.
Learning Outcomes. By the end of this course you will be able to explain a range of aspects
of film, including origins, cinematography, narrative and genre.
Timetable

 Day 1: Film History


 Day 2: Film Industries
 Day 3: Film Language
 Day 4: Film Narrative and Genre
 Day 5: Screenings (Video Essay)

Proposal 2: Introduction to Filmmaking – Two weeks


Course aims
During this course you will explore the creative and technical principles of film production
for various platforms and social media outlets. From storyboarding and scripting, to lighting
and camerawork and postproduction, it will provide a comprehensive overview of the key
skills needed to pursue a variety of moving image media career paths.
Week One
You will be introduced to the ideas, processes and skills needed to develop an idea from
pre-production and experience a film shoot. You will learn the essential principles of
lighting, sound, and framing, as well as operate the film and sound equipment, to develop
your confidence in film production.
At the end of week one you will have experience of a film production and gained an insight
into industry practices and techniques.
Week Two

You will be introduced to the ideas, processes and skills needed to take an idea through to
postproduction, utilising industry software.
The culmination of the course will be a screening of your work and the awarding of
certificates. Your work should be of a standard to add to your portfolio.

 Day 5: Tutorials
 
Weekend: Self negotiated direction

 Day 6: Continuity Editing and Editing Software (Adobe Creative Suite provided by
UCA)
 Day 7: Sound Mixing
 Day 8: Tutorials (Rough cut)
 Day 9:  Distribution and Exhibition
 Day 10: Screening

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course you will have experience of creative writing, self-negotiated
direction, cinematography, and a chance to develop your ideas through to postproduction.
