The table below shows corresponding values of resistance (R) gfkg -1 of a lathe chuck
and velocity (v) ms-1.

It is thought that there may be a law of the form R = a + bv 2 where (a) and (b) are
constants.

a. Test this law graphically (8 marks)


b. Find the best values of (a) and (b) from the graph (4 marks)

d. Find V when R = 14 gfkg-1. (2 marks)

The figure below shows a uniform bar weighing 2 kg per metre which is to be used to
lift a load of 100 kg.

a. Make an accurate sketch of the function y = 4x (x – 2) (x – 1) showing all critical


points such as the intercepts and turning points. (9 marks)

b. Find the area enclosed between the curve and the axis of x using the method of
integration. (6 marks)

QUESTION 5

a. A manufacturer makes one topped metal boxes by cutting squares out of each of
the corners of a sheet of metal measuring 16 cm by 30 cm. after folding up the
area of the base of the box is 225 cm 2. What are the dimensions of each square
that is cut from each corner? (9 marks)

b. The bending moment in newton-metres at a point in a beam is given by;


2M = 2.5x (15 – x), where x is the distance from the supports.
Find the value of x when the bending moment (M) is 63 Nm. (6 marks)

QUESTION 6

The density of steel is 7.8 g/cm3. Steel disc has a diameter of 8 cm and a thickness of 1.8
cm. a triangular groove is to be machined centrally around the rim to form a pulley. If
the triangular shape is isosceles with base 1.8 cm coinciding with the edges of the rim,
and perpendicular height 1.2 cm. find;

a. The volume of this metal removes and (13 marks)

b. The mass of the pulley using Pappus theorem. (2 marks)

a. Use the prismoidal rule to show that the volume of a frustum of a cone whose
base radius is (R), top radius (r) and vertical height (h) is equal to

b. Two circles have diameters which differ by 4 cm. if the sum of their areas is equal
to 146 cm2, determine their respective radii. (6 marks)
