5. An engine of 280kW is taking a train of mass 150tonnes up an incline of


1 in 250 and the resistance equals the weight of 350kg, What is the
maximum uniform speed of the train in Kmh-1? (5marks)

6. A coin is biased such that a head is twice as likely to occur as a tail. If


the coin is tossed 12 times, determine the;
i) Expected number of heads
ii) Probability of getting at most 2 tails (5marks)

7. Two particles of masses M1 and M2 kg are connected by a light


inextensible string passing over a small smooth fixed pulley. Prove that

9. a) Show graphically that the curve y = x 3 and the line y=2 x−3 have a
common root. From your graph, obtain the root to 1 decimal place. (4marks)

b) Use the Newton-Raphson Method to find the root of the equation correct
to 3 significant figures. (8marks)

10. Observation of a large number of buses at a certain point on a motor way


indicates that the speeds are normally distributed. 20% of the buses have
speeds of less than 35km/h, 68% of buses have speeds between 35km/h
and 45km/h.
i) Find the mean and standard deviation of the buses speed correct to 1
decimal place.

ii) If 25 buses are selected at random, find the probability that their average
speed is more than 41.5km/h. (12marks)

11. A lion sees a deer 100m due North running at a constant speed of 18kmh -1
due S 1200E. If the Lion can run at 36kmh-1, find the;
i) Course the Lion should take in order to intercept the deer.

ii) Time taken for the lion to catch the deer. (12marks)

12. The table below shows the marks obtained by students in Paper Two
Mathematics.

13. Four forces represented by i−4 j , 3i+6 j , −9 i+ j and 5 i−3 j , Newtons at


points with position vectors 3 i− j , 2i+2 j ,−i− j ,and −3 i+ 4 j respectively.
a) Show that the forces reduce to a couple and find its moment.

b) If the fourth force is removed, find the magnitude and direction of the
resultant force. (12marks)
14. The diameter of an egg produced by a hen of a certain farm depends on
the mass of the layers’ mass ratio it is fed as shown in the table below.

Assuming the egg to be spherical, find;


i) The optimum amount of the food the hen should be given if it is to
produce an egg of average diameter of 37.5gm.

ii) The radius of an egg if the food ratio supplied is 520mg.

b) Given that; a=52.426 , b=37.3and c=−12.93 are rounded off to the given decimal

16. a) A spring of constant k hangs vertically from a fixed point, with its other
end attached to a mass m. At equilibrium, weight mg produces an extension
a. If it is stretched by a length x from equilibrium and then released, find
the period of its subsequent motion.
b) A particle is describing simple harmonic motion in a straight line. When
its distance from O, the centre of its path, is 3m, its velocity is 16ms -1
towards O and its acceleration is 48ms-2 towards O. Find the;
i) Period and amplitude of motion.

ii) Time taken by the particle to reach O. (12marks)
