QUESTION 1

a. The figure below shows a rectangular metal plate. A circle of radius R has been
cut out at the centre and quadrants of circles of radius r from the corners as
shown. The remaining area forms a template of area of 200 cm 2. Show that the
equation 14.14r2 – 12r – 16 = 0 exists given that R = 2r. Hence find the values of
R and r. (10 marks)

b. The angle of elevation of the top of a hill from a certain point is 6 o 12 . After walking
1.42 km directly towards the hill, the angle of elevation of the top of the hill is 15 o 17 .
Find the height of the hill. (5 marks)

Plot the graph of y = - x2 + 5x + 2 for values of x from x = -2 to x = 7. By making use of the


graph and drawing suitable straight lines, find the solutions of the following equations:

i. –x2 + 5x + 2 = 0 ii. -x2 + 5x + 8 = 0 iii. -x2 + 5x - 4 = 0

iv. –x2 + x + 3 = 0 (15 marks)

QUESTION 3

a. A reciprocating engine mechanism is shown below, where OP represents the


rotating crank, PQ is the connecting rod and end Q is the piston which moves in a
horizontal line OR. If the rotating crank is 124 mm in length and the connecting
rod is 648 mm, calculate for the position shown;
i. Inclination of the connecting rod to the vertical

b. Find the area under the curve y = x2 + 2 between x = 1 and x = 4. (6 marks)

QUESTION 4

a. A cooling tower is in the form of a cylinder of height 15 m surmounted by a frustum of


a cone. The diameter of the cylinder and the bottom of the frustum is 30 m and the
diameter at the top of the tower is 18 m. The height of the tower is 40 m; calculate the
volume of air space in the tower if 35% of the space is used for pipes and other
structures. (8 marks)

b. A hot water storage tank consists of cylinder surmounted by a hemisphere. The


common radius is 400 mm and overall height is 0.9 m. find the area of lagging material
required to cover the entire tank. (7 marks)

a. Find the equation of the tangent to the curve y = x 3 – 2x2 + 5 at the point where
the value of x = 1. (7 marks)
b. Find the maximum and minimum values of the function;

QUESTION 6

a. A steel disc has a diameter of 12 cm and is of thickness 2.5 cm. a semi-circular


groove of diameter 2 cm has been machined centrally around the rim to form a
pulley. Find the volume of the pulley. (9 marks)
b. Expand (2x + 3y)3 in ascending powers of x using Pascal’s triangle. (6 marks)
