Don’t get fooled by the “we just want a good looking website that’s responsive”. There are always more
underlying reasons than that, by discovering them we will help the client look at the big picture. When
they are sending critique they will need to validate their decisions when nitpicking areas that are sub-
jective in the design. You will earn their trust and respect when you validate your design decisions with
higher level business objectives.

Here are common website goals for different departments in an organisation

• Marketing– drive traffic, engage prospects, generate leads and re-engage existing customers
• Sales–Increase customer conversions, increase sales
• Customer Support – improve customer satisfaction through better service
• Webmasters– simplify and optimize content updates and website management
• Operations– reduce costs by streamlining and automating workflows and task

So phrase the question using the above goals as a template.

Sales
Are you looking to build a responsive website because you are looking for an increase in traffic on mo-
bile devices? And are you looking to increase your sales by converting more of these users into paying
customers?

Customer Support
Are you trying to reduce the number of calls to customer support?

Marketing
Is one of the main goals of the website to generate more customer leads through email signups?

If you are feeling confident. Consider using SMART goals as well. Smart goals are essentially Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. For example:

Increase the website’s conversion rate by 5% in the next 3 months.

Reduce the average time it takes to complete a task by 20% (measured through usability testing or
analytics).

Increase traffic coming in via social media by 15%.
