Assignment 4: Evaluation of technology in learning science

Khan academy is a great e-learning website. It is a non-profit educational organization created in

2006 by educator Salman Khan with a goal of creating an accessible place for people to be
educated. It is totally free of charge and accessible for everyone. The organization produces short
lectures in the form of YouTube videos. All resources are available to users of the website. The
website and its content are provided mainly in English, but are also available in other language
such as Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, French, Bangla and Hindi.

I like this e-learning website is because it provide a personalized learning experience, mainly
built on the videos which are hosted on YouTube. Its website also includes progress tracking,
supplementary practice exercises and tools for educators. The material can also be accessed
through mobile applications. Students can do the exercises according to their own pace and it
will summarize and evaluate students progression and level of achievement. So that students
clearly understand which topic they could master and which topic they need to put more effort.

The videos show a recording of drawings on an electronic blackboard, which are similar to the
style of a teacher gives a lecture. The narrator describe each drawing and how they relate to the
material being taught. It is benefit the student in visualization of abstract science concepts to
solve problems. Videos range from all subjects in school include Math, Science and Engineering,
Computing, Arts and Humanities as well as Economics and Finance and for all grades,
Kindergarten to High School. Therefore it is a potential teaching tool in science classroom as it
provides complete subjects and exercises.

This Website also provides discussion board for participants to involve themselves in community
discussions. Participants can ask questions underneath any video, if participants unsure about
something, they are free to ask questions so that they can learn from community and help others
who have the same question. On the other hand, you can help others by answering the questions
underneath each video and earn badges while teaching the entire Khan Academy community.

Besides, it is a great resource in teaching and learning process because it has the badges earning
session. Learners can earn badges by watching videos, participating community discussions,
accepting mastery challenges and so on. This is a positive reinforcement that can encourage
learners crave for knowledge and increase their level of satisfactions as well as make learning
process fun and interesting.
