You are on page 1of 12

Basic interface:

You are shown up to 5 candidate terms for the webpage shown below. Please use the
checkboxes next to them to select the ones which satisfy the following conditions:
a. The term should convey some important information about the page. If someone asks
you to summarize the page with a few terms, this term would be among your choices.
b. The term should appear in the main content of the page. If it only appears in secondary
content like in the navigation bar, footer or side bar, please don’t select it. (It is fine for a
good term to appear in both the main content and secondary content).
c. It is fine for the term to only consist of one word, as long as it is not overly generic or
noninformative (e.g. “and”, “webpage”). Locations (like "Ohio", "Springfield") are often useful.
d. The term should be a standalone semantic unit, i.e. it has meanings on its own, as long as it
is not a complete sentence.
e. If a candidate is contained in another candidate (e.g. “Waste” and “Waste Management”
above), and both are good terms, only select the longer one.
f. If a term candidate is partial (e.g. if "John Smith" is an important concept of the page, but the
term is just "John", or if the full word is “almond” but the term only shows “mond”), please
don't select it.
We call a term that satisfy these conditions “keyphrase”.
Press “Submit” after selecting the checkboxes to move on to the next hit.
A few other things to note:
a. The hitapp loads a saved snapshot of the webpage, so the layout can look quite different
from the actual webpage. If the layout of the webpage is so bad that you can't make sense of
it, you can try clicking on the link under “Original url” to view the webpage in a new window.
b. If you click on a candidate term, it will show how many times it occurs in the webpage, and
highlights the occurrences below in orange.
c. Always select at least one candidate.
I like to think of the key terms as “tagging” a webpage. The tags should be specific enough that they
tell you should something useful about the page.
Examples
Terms I consider good keyphrases are underlined in red in the screenshots and highlighted in yellow
in the text below.
https://prettylittlething.ca/maroon-checked-shirt.html

In this case, only look for keyphrases in the listing detail, not the navigation bar at the top.
“Maroon Checked Shirt” is the best keyphrase here, and “CMN8907” is a pretty good choice too
because it looks like a product id, and thus conveys some key information about the page.

https://www.createforless.com/search/scrapbooking-and-paper-crafts/glues-adhesives-and-
tapes/results.aspx
In this case, the region in the red box is the most relevant, because the others are secondary
content like navigation bar and sidebar. “Glues, Adhesives & tapes” is a great candidate here.
Terms like “hot glue”, “tape runners”, “fabric glue”, “decoupage”, “Glue Dots”, “Mod Podge”,
“Aleene’s” and “E6000” are good choices if they are available as candidates.

https://witness.guardian.co.uk/

“Website” is too generic, but “GuardianWitness”, “Community” and “callouts” are good
keyphrases here.
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1271-Alhambra-Dr-Lancaster-TX-75146/96504961_zpid/
“(1271) Alhambra Dr”, “Lancaster”, “TX 75146”, “3 bd”, “2 ba”, “1,760 sqft” are good choices
here.
“Einar Parker” is a keyphrase here, but “Einar” or “Parker” alone isn’t.

https://au.indeed.com/sales-assistant-jobs-in-gold-coast-qld

“Sales assistant”, “gold coast qld” are the best ones here. “Jobs” and “resume” tell you important
information about this webpage and so are good candidates too.

https://www.naccho.org/blog/articles/cdc-clean-hands-count-campaign
“Clean Hands Count (Campaign)”, “Kim Rodgers”, “CDC” are clear choices. “Hand hygiene”, “education
course”, “promotional video” and “healthcare providers” are good choices too.

https://rightmove.co.uk/house-prices/bh25-7nx.html
“BH25 7NX”, “Byron Road”, “Barton On Sea”, “House prices”, “New Milton”, “Hampshire” are good
choices here.

https://www.kspares.com/sparepart/mak/
“Engine spare parts”, “Marine spare parts”, “MAK”, “8M32C” (and other model numbers) are good
choices here.

http://nationalyouthfishingassociation.com/entry-form/pta-entry/
“National Youth Fishing Association”, “Team fishing”, “Bass Fishing”, “PTA”, “membership/members”
are the best choices here. “State of Missouri”, “Missouri Department of Conservation” and “PO Box 297.
Rogersville, Mo. 65742” are decent choices but not as key.

https://ifdea.org/content/founding-associations-adee-adea

“Founding associations”, “ADEE”, “ADEA” (and their full names), “academic dentistry”, “dental
educators”, “dental schools”, “dental education” are good choices here.

https://www.espn.com/soccer/report?gameId=578295
“Chelsea”, “Leicester City”, “Premier League”, “top-four battle”, “2-1”, “Champions League” are the best
choices.
