GENERAL ‘This section contains all information necessary to install the VAF-20A/20B VHP Transceiver into an aircraft, and to ensure its operational readiness after installation, ‘Note No adjustment should be attempted after the unit is installed in the aircraft. Ad- justments that may be made when the equipment has been removed from the air- craft are described in the maintenance see- tion, 2. PREINSTALL TION CHECK To check VHF-20A/20B operation before installa- tion, perform the following checks. 2.1 Receive Current Dra Apply power to the VHF-204/20B with an ammeter connected in series with the line. Current should be 0.7 A maximum. ‘Note Do not ground ptt terminal for a period greater than 1 minute. Follow 1-minute transmit interval with a 4-minute receive interval, 2.2 Transmit Current Drain Load the antenna terminal and ground the ptt ter- minal. Input current should be 6.5 A maximum, 2.3 Transmitter Power Output and Frequency Accuracy Connect rf wattmeter and load to the antenna jack, Select the operating frequencies listed, ground the ptt terminal, and measure rf power output. Power output should be 16 watts minimum, Revised 1 June 1976 installation Connect a frequeney counter through an attenuator to the antenna jack and rf load. Select the operating frequencies listed, ground the ptt line, and measure the output frequencies. Frequencies should be within +.0015 percent of channel fre- queney. Test frequencies are 116.00 (VHF-20B), 118.000, 118.100, 119.200, 120.300, 122.400, 124.500, 126.600, 131.725, 183.850, 135.975, 140.000 (VHFF-20B), and 151.95 (VHF-20B). 24 Transmitter Sidetone Output Load antenna terminal and apply 1000 Ha at 0.125 Vrms to mie audio input terminal. Ground ptt ter- minal and measure sidetone voltage from receiver audio output terminals. Audio output should be 3.9 Vrms minimum. 2.5 Receiver Sensitivity Select operating frequeney at 118.000 MHz and app- ly a 3uV, unmodulated, 118.000-MHz signal to the antenna jack. Measure the receiver audio output to obtain a reference reading. Modulate the 3-uV signal 30 percent with 1000 Hz and measure the in- crease in receiver audio output in dB. Receiver audio output should increase 6 dB minimum. 2.6 Receiver Audio Output Apply a 1000-xV, 118.000-MHz signal modulated 85 percent with 1000 Hz to the antenna jack, and measure the receiver audio output voltage. Receiver audio output should be 7.75 V rms 5% 3. CABLING ‘A diagram of the suggested wiring connections for the VHF-20A/20B is shown in figure 1. When con- necting these wires, observe the following precautions. Bond and shield all parts of the air- craft electrical system, such as the generators and ignition systems. Refer to the left column, top of page 3. The wording will be changed to read as follows: sources of interference. Make all external connee- tions through a mating connector type DPA-29W1- 338-1 (Collins part number 370-2225-010) with one non-removable coaxial insert (Cannon part number DPA-50048-2, Collins part number 370- 2182-000), The interconnecting cable can be made with #22 AWG wire unless otherwise noted. Use approved, aircraft quality wire. Use the guidelines in FAA Advisory Circular 43.13-18 section 3 for additional information on wire selection. Leave slack in the wire to allow free sway of the equipment when using the 890R-19 mount with shock isolators. Changed/added wording is in Bold text. After it is installed in the mating connector, the coaxial insert is not removable. There is no need to have the extraction too! that is listed. Please notice that the sentence referring to the extraction tool has been deleted. ‘Addendum 1 Aug 1997 528-0765213-06611A Sheet 1 of 1 (Facing page 3) sources of interference. Make all external connec tions through a mating connector type DPA.29W1- 838-1 (Collins part number 370-225-010) with one coaxial insert (Cannon part number DPA-50048-2, Collins part number 370-2182-000). The coaxial insert extraction tool for the mating connector is CPN 870-8046-010 (ITT Cannon CET-CE). The inter- connecting cable can be made with #22 AWG wire unless otherwise noted; thermoplastic insulated wire is recommended, Leave slack in the wire to allow free sway of the equipment when using the 390R-19 mount with shock isolators. Normally, the shields of the audio wires should be grounded only at one end and connected to a single- point aircraft electrical ground. For balaneed con- nections, use of twisted-pair, shielded wire will result in minimum pickup of electrostatic and magnetie fields. Avoid long runs of wire, and keep input and output circuits well separated insofar as practical ‘The 313N-( ) or equivalent control will provide a remote power on/off function if a power switching relay is installed in the aireraft power distribution area. The 313N-() and CTL-20 control provide a ground to activate an external relay when the power switch is moved from off to on. After installation of the eabling and before installa~ tion of the equipment, a check should be made with power applied to the mating connector. Check to be sure that power is applied only to the pins specified by the wiring diagram. 4. INSTALLATION PROCEDURES 4.1 Control Unit ‘The VHF-20A/20B is used with the 81N-( ) Control Unit, CTL-20 Control, or equivalent. For outline and mounting information and frequency range of con- trol units, refer to the applicable instruction book: B13N-2 (523-0754001), 313N-3 (523-6752001), 318N-4/ 4A/4B/4C/4D (523-0756681), 313N-5/5A (523- 0756632). The -5XX series 819N-( ) controls instruc- tion book is CPN 523-0769408. The CTL-20 control information is contained in the CTL-X0 Control Instruction Book (523-0769247). 4.2 Antenna ‘The VHF-20A/20B is used with the 37R-2 VHF Com- munications Antenna or equivalent. For outline and mounting information, refer to Collins General Avia- tion Antennas Instruction Book (523-0769091). Revised 21 May 1984 instal 4.3 Microphone ‘The VHF-20A/20B modulator input circuit is designed to be used with a 150-ohm carbon microphone or equivalent to obtain rated modula tion. 44 Receiver Aural Output ‘The VHF-20A/20B receiver audio amplifier is capable of applying 100 milliwatts of audio power into a 600-ohm load. This output is sufficient to drive an aireraft audio system or headphones. 4.5 VHF-204/20B Mount ‘The VHF-20A/20B can be mounted on a 390R-19 mount. Optional adapters are available for dual installations. For outline and mounting informa- tion, refer to the 390R-18/19/20 Universal Mount Kits Assembly Instructions contained in Universal Mounts Assembly Instructions (523-0766506). A ‘UMT-12 Mount may also be used in place of the 390R- 19. Refer to UMT-10/11/12/13 Mounts Instruction Book (523-0772277). 4.6 VHF-204/20B Outline and mounting dimensions for the VHF- 204/208 VHF Transceiver are presented in figure 2. To install the VHF-20A/20B, slide the VHF- 20A/20B into the mount until the mating connector is fully engaged. Position the knurled knobs on the front of the mount to engage the VHF-20A/20B mounting projections. Tighten the knurled knobs until the VHF-20A/20B is secured in the mount. 5. POSTINSTALLATION TE: ‘TROUBLESHOOTING TING AND 5.1 Testing After all cabling has been installed and the equip- ment has been mounted in the aircraft, make the operational check outlined below to ensure correct operation of the equipment in the aireraft. This test must be made using the aircraft power supply with the engines operating, a. Energize the VHF-20A/20B by turning on the remote on/off switch and the aireraft circuit breaker. b. Check the VHF-204/20B squelch disable circuit by positioning the remote on/off switch to test.
