The following assignment carries a total of 5 marks.

Junaid, an 8 year old boy, is able to understand the possibility of his friend not liking his mother
but he cannot understand the reason for it, despite knowing that his friend’s mother mistreats
him. Using concepts from Piaget’s cognitive stages of development explain the reason behind
Junaid’s lack of understanding. (5)

Junaid is on the pre-operational (2-7yrs) stage of cognitive development. Junaid ego centric right
now which means that has yet to develop the capability to understand other people’s perspective.
That is the reason behind why he cannot understand why his friend does not like his mother.
However he understand the possibility that his friend may not like his mother, the reason why
Junaid can understand the possibility is that her is beginning to enter the concrete operational
stage (7-11yrs) where the child is able to understand other people’s perspective about which can
differ from their perspective.
