Questions

1. Meaning of warehousing material handling.

2. Describe warehousing handling techniques.
3. Explain safety measure in handling materials in a warehouse.
INTRODUCTION;

Warehouse; Is an integral part of every logistics system that stores products,

provides information to management on the ststus, condition and the disposition of

products being stored carrying inventories in every stage of logistics process:

1. Warehouse Material handling;

Material handling is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and

products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption and

disposal. As a process, material handling involves a wide range of manual, semi-

automated and automated equipments and systems that support logistics and enable the

supply chain.

Warehouse material handling systems and processes are crucial in creating time and

place utility which is done by changing the shape, form and make up of materials to

inhence form utility of materials, it is also essential in other factors like improvement in

customer services, reduce inventory, shorten delivery time, and lower overall costs in

manufacturing distribution and transportation:

2. Warehousing handling techniques;

Warehousing handling techniques are employed so as to make sure there are smooth

sequence of activities and procedures in the process of moving materials mostly in short

distance example between storing facilities and transporting vehicle.

The following are the techniques used in Warehouse material handling;

a) Optimize warehouse layout;

In order to facilitate a good flow of material in the warehouse it is important that the

warehouse internal layout is properly optimized interms of good arrangement of

inventories to reduce the risk of accidents to insure maximum safety and good use of

space for future storage, adoptability and smooth flow of materials. It is also important fo

the warehouse internal layout to be associated with the external layout.

b) The use of advanced material handling equipments;

Material handling equipments are mechanical equipments used for the movement,

storage control and protection of materials goods and products generally in the process of

manufacturing, distribution, consumption and disposal. These material handling

equipments helpd to minimize the risk of damage, time comsumption and reuduce

accidents that may lead to injuries. Example of these equipments inclludes cranes, fork

lifts, convayers etc.

c) Proper management of Inventories;

Good inventory management includes basic warehousing activities like keeping

records of the materials kept in the store as well as putting lebles necessary to distinguish

and identify materials making an easier process of picking stocks required for order,

arrangement and disposal of materials kept in the store. This helps to provide and

maintain accuracy material handling in the warehouse.

d) Optimizing Picking routines;

It is crucial and very necessary for the picking routines to be properly planned and

organized so as to minimize the distance and time consumption used in moving materials

in the storing facilities eg. warehouses and it also helps to reduce potential accidents by

providing easy means and measures to assure proper material handling in the warehouse.

e) Using proper type of storage systems and storage aids;

Choosing, selecting and using the proper type of storage system is essential factor

in promoting and facilitating material handling in the warehouse it helps to reduce the

risk of damage and potential accidents in the warehouse that may lead to loss and

spoilage of products kept in the warehouse, these storage system are likely to be applied

and used on products of the same nature example of these systems includes the use of

pallets, racks, shelves and making blocks these systems make the process of picking

products easier and hence facilitates material handling.

3. Safety measures in handling materials in the warehouse;

These are the measures taken in the process and activities involved in material handling

in the warehouse to make sure that the warehousing enviroment and employees are safe

from any potential accidents or hazards that may be threat to warehousing actvities.

The following are the safety measures in handling materials in the warehouse

a) Proper use of personal protective equipments

These are equipments used to protect the warehouse employees from any potential

hazards that may be coused by having direct contact or falling un intentionally that can

possibly couse injuries, example of hist protective equipments inclused helments, gloves,

boots and overcoats.

b) Use of safe lifting postures and techniques;

These are postures and techiques that improves safety of employees during lifting of

heavy materials manually in the warehouse, these postures allows employees to dis

engage in the process in case of any emergency so as to avoid injuries and further

damages that may be coursed in manual lifting process.

c) Use of clear labels to show hozarduos zones and materials;

The use of hazardous labels will help to increase awareness of emplees in the process of

handling such materials and dealing with hazardous designated areas in warehouses
d) Provide training and refresher courses;

It is necessary to ensure that all employees are educated and kept updated with

knowledge about the safe practices within the warehouse. This will provide awareness to

staff about the concequences that can be coused from unsafe working enviroments.

Accidents are likely to be the outcome of unsafe enviroment in the warehouse.

e) Ensure safety equipments are used all the time

In the warehouse it is vital that forklifts and hydraulic dollies are used to lift items

that are too heavy. Appropriate safety equipments should also be used when required.

Staffs should be aware of emergency exits and the sprinklers installed in the roof should

not be blocked at anytime. Safety equipments are implemented in order to minimize the

risk of injuries and to ensure material safety.

f) Eliminate Any Potential Safety Hazards

Ensure all warehousing floors are free of ‘slip and trip’ hazards. It is important

that this safety check is carried out on a regular basis, by all employees, and that the

floor is always free of stray cords, liquids and any other potentially hazardous items.

It is also essential that any cracks and pits in the flooring are attended to as these can

cause serious injuries to employers as well as damaging expensive machinery.

Conclusion

Warehouse plays a crucial rule in integrated supply chain operation and make a

positive contribution. The appropriate operations function in a warehouse not only

improve customer service, but also bring profit as well. To ensure perfect

operation of a warehouse, a good layout planning and work flow should be

implement. Purchasing team should also develop delicate program for supplier

measurement and establish good relationship with all suppliers to ensure timely

and abundant supplement.
