WHAT ARE 3 STAGES OF WASTE WATER TREATMENT?

There are three stages of wastewater treatment processes available, they are referred to as
primary, secondary and tertiary treatments. Each stage purifies the water to a high level of
water treatment. Let’s go through the article now!

Primary treatment

Primary wastewater treatment is the process that involves in filterring out the solid wastes in
water. This method is done after filtering out larger constraints within the water. The resulting
“sludge” is then fed into a digester, during which further processing takes place.

Secondary treatment

In secondary treatment, biological treatment is completed on wastewater to get rid of the

organic matter present. This treatment is performed by indigenous and aquatic micro-
organisms like bacteria and protozoa which consume biodegradable soluble contaminants like
sugar, fat, detergent, and garbage. These processes are sensitive to temperature and with a rise
in temperature, the speed of biological reactions increases.

Secondary treatment methods include:

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Tertiary treatment (stage 3)

Tertiary treatment, also referred as polishing, that disinfects water to the very best standards.
This stage is important to supply water to specification, like technical waters, and to treat
wastewater for public water systems.

Tertiary treatment methods include:

UV disinfection requires no chemicals, and it are often utilized in place of chemicals. This
suggests no extra filtering stage for additives. UV doesn't affect the pH, appearance, taste or
smell of water, but it does destroy microorganisms.

Cchemicals disinfection involves in adding some chemicals to the water. The most common
chemical used in the water is chlorine. Chlorination kills bacteria and viruses, but this treatment
has the disadvantage of requiring a stage for di-chlorination before discharge into the
environment.
