Exercise II – Inelastic Response of a Structure with Hysteretic Dampers

Feb, 2021

Objective: To apply the concepts of structural dynamics and seismic design in order to obtain
the inelastic response of a SDOF structure with hysteretic dampers, under a given ground
motion.

• Find the inelastic response of the elevated water tank of Exercise 1, incorporating
hysteretic dampers. Use the ElCentro40Ns ground motion.
• Assume that dampers are appropriately connected to the main structure, sharing the same
top displacement.
• Assume only lateral displacement.
• Concrete compressive strength: f’c=210 kgf/cm 2.
• Use the computer program SDOF(F-D)_V.2.90 for the NLDA.
• Properties of the damper system: investigate different approaches.
• Response modification factor: investigate different values and performance objectives.
• Hysteresis rule: Elastic-plastic, symmetrical, for both systems. You can investigate other
hysteresis rules.
• Units: t-f, m, s
