Exercise I – Inelastic Response of Structures

Feb, 2021

Objective: To apply the concepts of structural dynamics and seismic design in order to obtain
the inelastic response of a SDOF structure under a given ground motion.

• Find the elastic and inelastic response of the elevated water tank shown in the figure
below, under ElCentro40Ns ground motion.
• Assume only lateral displacement.
• Concrete compressive strength: f’c=210 kgf/cm 2.
• Use the computer program SDOFIN_V.3.90 for the NLDA.
• Response modification factor: R=5.0
• Neglect the weight of the concrete column and tank.
• Damping ratio: h=5%
• Integration time step: dt=0.005s
• Hysteresis rule: Elastic-plastic, symmetrical.
• Ductility capacity: 3.0
• Use the tank height according to your selected case scenario.
• Units: t-f, m, s

Case 1 2 3 4 5
h(m) 1.0 1.25 1.50 1.75 2.0

Recommended points to be investigated:

• Lateral stiffness.
• Natural period.
• Elastic design force Fe (force required to keep the system elastic) and bending moment
at column base.
• Inelastic design force (= Fe / R) and bending moment at column base.
• Reinforcement area due to bending moment at the column base for both design forces.
• Global displacement demand and ductility demand.
• Energetic response.
• Hysteretic response (force vs displacement).
• Comparison of structural responses between elastic and inelastic response.
