The Three Biblical F’s of Marriage

It was not until the 17th Century that a marriage license became necessary for a
marriage of one man and one woman to be considered legal. From the 5 th century
down to the 16th century, a man and a woman only needed to post or announce
the marriage to neighbors, friends and families that they are married to make it
official; thus, there was no need for at least one witness during the marriage
ceremony to make it legally binding. But really, who has the right to impose
marriage?

In this sermon, the Bible teaches us the three important F’s of marriage. These
serve as guides and reminders of what God really designed for His own creation,
what He destined it to be, and what we need to look out for and shield ourselves
from in this forsaken world.

Three F’s of Marriage:

 Formation of Marriage
o Then some Pharisees came to him in order to test Him. They asked,
“Is it lawful to divorce a wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you
not read that from the beginning the Creator made them male and
female.” - Matt. 19:3-4
o In these particular verses, the Pharisees challenged Jesus about
divorce. He was able to rebuke them with an answer that came all
the way back from the creation in Genesis 1-2, in other words, the
foundation of the world.
o God saw that all He made in the beginning was good. His wisdom is
infinite.
o But He also noticed something that is NOT GOOD, that is, Adam (or
man) to be alone in the Garden of Eden. So He let him fall into a deep
sleep and took part of his side and made a woman out of it. And He
saw that it was good, too. All of His creation, as He designed it to be,
was VERY GOOD.
o In this particular text (and supporting verses from Genesis), we can
conclude that even in the beginning, the formation of marriage is a
HETEROSEXUAL UNION. The participants of marriage are ONLY a
male and a female.
o Who has the right to impose marriage? God officiated the first
marriage in human history so I guess this answers the question.
o Supporting verses: Gen.1:4, 1:10,1:12,1:18;1:21

 Fruits of Marriage
o “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be
united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” – Matt. 19:5
o Two fruits of marriage: (1) human expansion/procreation and (2)
commitment. (Supporting verse: Gen. 1:28)
o Sexual union between a man and a woman within the bounds of
marriage is God’s gift. But because of SIN, it became perverted;
hence, sexual immorality & adultery.
o Marriage not only bears procreation but also commitment. A couple
should only commit themselves to one another if they are prepared
spiritually, physically, financially and emotionally.

 Foes of Marriage:
o DIVORCE is the number one foe of marriage. God’s design is
permanence. It is a timeless truth.
o Other foes of marriage: low moral values, media, peer pressure,
sexual immorality, etc.
o But, there are only TWO EXCEPTIONS why divorce is permitted (only
because of man’s own doing NOT God’s.)
 Sexual Immorality
 Abandonment (Death of the partner)
o Divorce was only legalized in some parts of the world because it’s
simply a convenience for humans. Just so they could break their
chains and go on with their immoral lives and not feel guilty about it
because they aren’t committed to someone else.
o Supporting verses: 1 Thess. 4:3-5; 2 Tim. 2:22; Heb 13:4-6; 1 Tim 1:8-
