The rite of renewal

For Altar Servers

 Rite of Renewal

After the gospel reading, the celebrant in the homily, based on the sacred text and pertinent to the
particular place and the people involved, explains the meaning of the celebration.
The rite follows the homily.

CALLING OF THE CANDIDATES

The animator of the Altar Servers approaches the sanctuary. Then he says:

ANIMATOR: Let the Altar Servers please stand for the Rite of Renewal.
Reverend Father, the Commission on Worship of the Vicariate of
Tacloban asks you to receive the renewal of our brothers as Altar
Servers.

PROFESSION OF FAITH
PRIEST: Before you renew your commitment, I ask you now, to profess the
faith of your baptism.
MINISTERS: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, (At the words that follow, up to
and including the Virgin Mary, all bow.) who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third
day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is
seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will
come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the
holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

EXAMINATION
PRIEST: Dear brothers, you are here today to be renewed in the exercise of
your ministry. In this ministry, you must be examples of Christian
living in faith and conduct; you must strive to grow in holiness.
Remember that, though many, we are one body because we share the
one bread and one cup. As lay liturgical ministers, therefore, be
especially observant of the Lord’s command to love your neighbor.
For when he gave his body as food to his disciples, he said to them:
“This is my commandment, that you should love one another as I have
loved you.” Therefore, declare once again your intention and
resolution to undertake this ministry.
Are you resolved to perform your ministry with grace and serve your
parish with love in everything you do?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to form yourselves as worthy guards of honor to
Jesus, our Divine Eucharistic King, in whose service you willingly
assume the dignity and honor of being a server?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to render faithful, reverent, and edifying service to
God by assisting bishops and priests in offering the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass and in all other liturgical and devotional functions?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to enkindle in the hearts of the faithful greater piety
and devotion by reverently performing your duties with greater
understanding of what you are doing?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to be good examples to the people in the image and
likeness of our Lord Jesus Christ?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Are you resolved to promise respect and obedience to the Diocesan
Bishop, and to your respective Parish Priests who represents our Lord
Jesus Christ in your parish?
MINISTERS: I am.
PRIEST: Let us rely on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ,
and we renew these, our brothers to service as Altar Servers for the
Vicariate of Tacloban.
May you follow the example of Christ, who did not come to be serve
but to serve not for his own glory but for the greater glory of God the
Father.
MINISTERS: Thanks be to God.

PRAYER OF BLESSING
Pause for silent prayer. The celebrant then continues:

God of Glory,
your beloved Son has shown us
that true worship comes from humble and contrite hearts.
Bless + our brethren,
who have responded to the needs of the parishes
of the Vicariate of Tacloban
and have committed themselves
to your service as altar servers.
Grant that their ministry may be fruitful
and our worship pleasing in your sight.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
MINISTERS: Amen.
If it is desirable, the priest may sprinkle holy water on the ministers.
