BLESSING OF AN AMBRY

GREETING

+ Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R. Who made heaven and earth.
GREETING

In the Old Testament, oil was used as a sign of

healing and anointing for kings, priests, and
prophets, for they prefigured Christ, the
Anointed One. The Church continues to use three
kinds of oils: the oil of catechumens, the oil of
the sick, and Holy Chrism.

This Oil of the Sick has been blessed for the

healing of body, mind, and soul. Holy Chrism, a
mixture of olive oil and balm, has been
consecrated to anoint infants after Baptism,
those to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation,
those to be ordained priests and bishops, and
also altars and churches at the time of their
dedication.
READING

From the Book of Leviticus: Lev 8:10-12

Taking the anointing oil, Moses anointed and

consecrated the Dwelling, with all that was in it.

Then he sprinkled some of this oil seven times

on the altar, and anointed the altar, with all its
appurtenances, and the laver, with its base, thus
consecrating them.

He also poured some of the anointing oil on

Aaron's head, thus consecrating him.

The word of the Lord.

PRAYER OF BLESSING

Let us pray.

Gracious and loving God,

you anointed priests, prophets and kings of old
with the oil of gladness.
You infuse your Church
with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit,
and heal, comfort, and sanctify
those anointed with oil in your name.

Let this repository + remind us always

of your sacramental mysteries.

May the holy oils kept here,

the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens
and Holy Chrism,
confirm our unity in faith and prayer
with our Bishop, and all members of your Church,
and be effective signs of the love
that you pour forth into our hearts.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.
