or at home, please consider the following safety and security tips to have a happy
holiday.
Accommodation Security
• Be aware of your new surroundings and take note of emergency plans.
• Ensure all doors and windows are locked, even when going out for a short time.
• Secure valuable items in a safe. If there is no safe, take them with you.
• Take your keys with you. Do not hide them.
Vehicle Security
• Keep your keys in a safe location. Do not hide them in your car, caravan or boat.
• Remove all valuable items from the car, boat and trailer.
• Secure and lock all doors and windows.
• Securely attach trailers and boats to a vehicle or a solid fixture when not in use.
Personal Safety
• Tell your family and friends of your travel plans and provide them with your
itinerary so they know where you are and how to contact you in an emergency.
• Where possible, travel with a friend or in a group.
• Maintain regular contact with your family or friends, so they know you are safe.
• Keep your mobile phone charged and in your possession, as you may require it
in an emergency.
• Don’t carry large amounts of money. Only carry what you need for the day.
• Where there is no footpath, walk against the flow of traffic.
• Never hitchhike or accept a ride with strangers.
Water Activities
• Be aware of water, beach or river safety issues including rips, currents, maritime
safety and the dangers of marine life.
• At the beach, always swim between the flags.
• Never leave valuable items unattended or under a towel. Use a watertight
container or leave your items secured in your holiday home.
Bushwalking
• Plan your walk. Visit www.alert.sa.gov.au for the latest news from SA, Emergency
Services and weather forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology.
• Never travel alone. Make sure everyone with you is able to complete the walk.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Take enough food, water, suitable clothing and basic emerge, items.
Road Safety
• Plan your trip. Drive on major roads and don’t take shortcuts.
• Make sure your vehicle is road worthy and you have sufficient fuel.
• Interstate and overseas visitors must carry a current drivers licence.
• Always drive with your doors locked.
• Never pick up hitchhikers.
• Share long distance driving and stop for at least 15 minutes
every two hours.
• In South Australia the speed limits are: Open roads 100 km/h,
built-up areas 50 km/h, unless otherwise signposted.
• You and your passengers must wear a seatbelt.
• Do not exceed the prescribed concentration of alcohol for your
class of driver’s licence (0.05 for holders of a full driver’s licence).
• It is an offence to drive a motor vehicle whilst being under the influence of a
drug, or having a prohibited drug in your oral fluid or blood.
• It is an offence to drive whilst using a mobile phone.
• You must wear an approved helmet that is correctly fitted and fastened when
riding motor bikes, bicycles and wheeled recreational devices such as
rollerblades, skateboards and scooters.
Arson Prevention
Arson is the act of intending, or being reckless, to destroy or damage property
with fire .
Arson can occur against different types of property including vehicles, homes,
buildings, and other tangible property. Arson can also occur in grassed and bush
areas.
Remembering some simple prevention tips you can consider to minimise the
risk of arson in your community.
• Keep your home, sheds and vehicles locked at all times.
• Consider the storage location of any fuel and flammable liquids – if possible
store in a locked cabinet located away from the house.
• Keep your premises clear of combustibles such as rubbish and plant material.
• Keep lawns and grasslands surrounding homes and sheds maintained. If
necessary contact your local council to manage surrounding areas.
• Plant shrubs and bushes away from houses and sheds.
• Be alert to suspicious activity, record the details. If necessary, report to Police.
• Consider signage with regard to arson prevention and penalties.
• Be on the lookout for other forms of vandalism. If graffiti or damage is not cleared
up quickly, it can make the area a target for arson.
• Ensure periodic inspections of your own property and conduct fire risk
assessments.
• Install fire extinguishers, fire blankets, smoke alarms and any other fire protective
equipment necessary, ensuring these systems are checked regularly.
• Gaps under doors should be narrow to prevent paper or fuel being pushed under
them.
• Consider joining your local Neighbourhood Watch, Business Watch or Rural
Watch program.

 A Christmas Message from Mannum Interchurch Council
Who loves like Jesus? Or do we prefer to judge?
efore WW2, in Port Adelaide, on opposite sides of the Port River, where
B the Birkenhead Bridge is now, were two establishments, which catered to
the ‘needs’ of merchant seamen. They were Auntie Rosie’s and Ma Slattery’s.
Respectable people would know nothing of these places, except for a few who
ventured a walk on the ‘wild side’.
Sometime during those lean times of the ‘20s and ‘30s, a seaman broke his leg
and could not work. A Tory Government was in power, so it was a matter of
“No work, no pay!” The injured seaman was in dire straits, and the girls at Ma
Slattery’s heard about him.
One night, without a word to anyone, one of the girls went out at 7 o’clock
and returned at 11 with enough money to meet his needs. She had earned the
money immorally, using her body. How should she be judged? What does the
Bible say? How would you judge her? She had gained nothing from her actions;
Cruising on the
Mighty Murray River
I f you have never experienced a leisurely cruise on the Murray, Mannum is the

The grand PS Murray Princess and PW Mayflower depart twice a week and
the PS Marion, built in 1897, offers short and long cruises throughout the year.
The Mayflower will cruise every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30am and 1pm
for a 1.5 hour cruise and has a capacity of 25 passengers. She will also cruise on
the first Sunday of every month at the same times in conjunction with the
Mannum Riverside Markets at Arnold Park next door to the Museum.
Tea/Coffee and bar facilities are available on board and the Captain will
provide a commentary. This cruise will take you to the Caloote Cliffs and
return capturing an ever-changing river landscape for the passenger to enjoy.

to enjoy heritage cruising on the magnificent Murray River.

Mannum Rowing Club Regatta
or almost all of its 109 years, with the exception of the War
F Years and Floods, the Mannum Rowing Club has held an Annual Regatta.
Traditionally it was held on the Monday of the Australia Day Weekend. Since
the Australia Day Holiday is now held on the day on which it falls, the
allocation of the Regatta day has changed.
The 2019/20 Season Regatta will be held on Saturday 4th April 2020

they were totally selfless! Some of her clients were doubtless from the dregs of
society, but she did it for the sake of a fellow human being in need.
In 1912, General Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, died, and 40,000
attended his funeral in the Crystal Palace. The Queen was there, in mufti. Beside
her sat a once fallen woman who had been rescued by the General and his Army.
As the coffin passed, the woman placed three faded carnations on the lid. The
Queen was visibly moved when the woman turned and said, “‘E cared for the
likes of us.”
Who could ever want a better epitaph than that? We would do well to live in
such a way as to earn that sort of praise.

hree ferry crossings are within easy reach of Mannum. All ferry journeys
T across the Murray are free; operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year;
and leave every few minutes. You don’t need a motor vehicle; pedestrians and
cyclists are also welcome. Take a day trip and use all three ferries.
Mannum: Two parallel ferries, “Swan” and “Avocet”, leave from
the terminal between the Information Centre and Caravan Park.
Purnong: The “Kingfisher” plies the narrowest river crossing in
South Australia.
Walker Flat: The ferry here is called “Stilt II”.

 Mannum Christmas Pageant, Street Party and Fireworks Display
his annual event on the first Saturday of December delights local families
T and visitors as it traverses Mannum’s main street. The pageant, which
usually boasts between 60 and 70 floats (not bad for a little town), ends with a
great Christmas street party and fireworks display.
The Mannum Progress Association works long hours to bring Mannum alive
at Christmas, and with all our brightly coloured Christmas bells and wreaths
adorning the street, Randell Street is quite a Christmas picture.
Each year, Mannum business and community groups and the Mid Murray
Council generously support the Pageant, Street Party and Fireworks. Each year
a few new floats appear, with the Southern Districts Pipe Band, the Klemzig
Oompah Band and Lee Brocky and the Outback Overdrive entertaining all.
The children of the town and district get free face painting, jumping castle
and other entertainment whilst waiting to see Father Christmas, who gives all
children under 12 a goodie bag. There is a wide variety of food for all the
family. The evening ends with the amazing river fireworks spectacular at
9:30pm.
This event, on the first Saturday in December, should be on the annual “to
do” list for all members of the community and visitors to Mannum.
Also, don’t forget our New Year’s Eve spectacular Fireworks display at
midnight in front of the Mannum Bowling Club, organised by Mannum
Progress Association, but funded by the generous donations from local
businesses, individuals and the Mid Murray Council.

Carols by the River Christmas Tree Festival

ach year, ‘Carols by the River’, is presented the beautiful Mary Ann
E Reserve on the River Murray foreshore, with the spectacular backdrop of
the brilliant lights of the Paddle Boat MV Murray Princess.
Local and guest musicians lead the evening with a variety of new songs and
well-known favourites to get us all into the Christmas spirit. Children are
catered for and Santa always arrives sometime during the evening.
A short message on the true meaning of Christmas is usually presented by one
of the local clergy. Candles are available for a gold coin donation.
There are BBQs, a Lions sausage sizzle, a public swimming area, toilets and
changing rooms and a large grassed area on which to sit. It is wise to bring your
own chairs and rugs, as well as insect repellent and a light jacket.
The carols are presented on the second Saturday of December – this year on
Saturday 14th December. If you missed this year’s event, next year (2020) the
Carols will be held on Saturday 12th December, 2020. Put this date in your
diary. Come and enjoy this unique celebration of carols.
he Christmas Festive season is a busy time for a lot of people and organisations.
T In Mannum the town celebrates a Christmas Tree Festival every year, usually on
the last Friday in November from 9am to 2:30pm in the Mannum Leisure Centre.
The event is called the Christmas Tree Festival because of the many and varied
decorated Christmas trees on display. It is a great community event. There are raffles
and the school children provide entertainment during the course of the day. Mannum
Community College senior students will provide morning tea and light lunches at
very reasonable prices.
The occasion is a time when many not-for-profit groups come together to raise
funds for worthwhile community causes. These groups have stalls for craft, toys,
food, plants and Christmas goodies that the school children can buy for family and
friends.
Admission $2, with children admitted free. Funds raised are divided between
School Pastoral Care and Friends of Aminya.
So, if you are a local, support your community events. If you are a visitor, welcome
to our great town, enjoy what we have to offer and come again.

 Visitor Information Centre and Dock Museum
While you are on holiday, come and visit the Visitor Information
Centre and Museum situated in Randell Street near the ferries.
The Centre is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and from
10am to 4pm on weekends.
Enjoy air conditioned comfort as you browse the large array of
souvenirs such as postcards, tea towels, books and other assorted
gifts, including local products. Internet access is also available, along
with a wealth of information from all the regions of South Australia.
On the inside walls of the centre is the mark of the 1956 flood level
(quite amazing). If you have any queries, our friendly volunteers are
ready and willing to help you. The information Centre is the gateway
to the Mannum Dock Museum of Mannum’s river history.
The Museum contains the 1956 flood footage, which can be
watched in the area adjacent to the gallery. Displays of the PS Mary
Ann, the Murrabit and the David Shearer telescope are the centre
pieces of the museum along with a model engine of the Mary Ann,
completely made from wood. The Shearer stripper and an old wool
press are also items which should be viewed.
Included in the Museum is the PS Marion, which was built in 1897.
Many of the rooms are open for inspection including the wheelhouse
and galley where Essie is housed. Essie is the commercial wood stove

the three Mannum Walking Trails.
Each trail has a pioneer theme and is named in honour of one of our
significant pioneers; William Randell, David & John Shearer, and
George Arnold.
The walks have a series of interpretive signs to help understand the
areas heritage. The geology of the river formation can be better
understood along the Randell Walk.
The large interpretive sign on the front wall of the Visitor
Information Centre is the starting point for the Randell and Shearer
walks. The Mannum Historic Walks brochure available from the
Information Centre contains maps, descriptions and estimated length
of each walk, as well as background information and photographs
The Shearer Walk, starting at the Visitor Information centre, takes
you through the middle of town focussing on the development of
commerce in Mannum from 1853.

which has turned out many meals over the
years. Paddle steamer cruises are offered at
selected times during the year and PS Marion
is available for charter cruises, either carrying passengers on short
cruises or overnight cruises. Information on these cruises is available
in the Information Centre.
The Paddle Wheeler Mayflower restored by volunteers to 1913 era
offers weekly cruises on Tuesday and Thursdays and the first Sunday
of the month in conjunction with the Mannum Markets at 10:30 am
and 1:00 pm the Mayflower is also available for private charter and
group bookings. She can accommodate 25 passengers. Information
on these cruises is available at the Information Centre.
Randell’s Steam Works shed is where the 1850s Key Beam Engine
was recommissioned in April 2009. This engine was used by William
Randell for pumping at the Dry Dock and to supply water to
Randell’s Bleak House. The Dry Dock is believed to be the only one
of its kind still in existence. Also housed in the shed is the 1877 Bilge
Pump/Feed Water Pump which was used in PS Marion. Both of these
pumps are in working order.
The museum also has a working blacksmith’s shop.
Museum entry fees:
$7.50 per adult, $5.00 concession, $3.50 for children.
As you walk along Randell Street, observe the brass plaques on the
old buildings. Collect the Historic Plaques brochure from the Visitor
Information Centre.
The Randell Walk explores the northern end of town and also
starts at the Visitor Information Centre. The brochure has Randell
stories to read while viewing the old family homes. Continue on to
learn more of Mannum’s cultural heritage, geological formations and
the importance of William Randell in Australia’s history.
The Arnold Walk starts at the Showgrounds on North Terrace. The
longest of the walks takes a more general look at the southern side of
town. Randell’s development of the nation’s paddle steamer transport
system became one of the great success stories of the River Murray.
If you would like to challenge the festive season calories, what
better way than to try at least one of the Mannum Historic Walks.
You and your holiday visitors can discover some of the secrets of
Mannum.
