Question #1

An example of a collaborative partnership is Sangamo and Biogen (case study). Sangamo gained
access to funds to continue research and a partner (Biogen) with experience in innovative clinical
trials and drug commercialization as a result of the partnership. Biogen acquired access to
proprietary technologies (as well as unspoken information of ZFNs) with a possible benefit margin
larger than their initial investment. A license arrangement was used based on the case report. The
advantages of this mode for Biogen included quick access to technologies at a lower cost than
internal production and the use of existing competencies; for Sangamo, the benefits included
maintaining ownership of patented technology and securing capital to stay solvent. The drawbacks
of included the fact that the partnership goal was not integral to either firm's long-term goals.

Question # 2

Collaborative partnerships are very popular these days, and their number has increased dramatically
over the last few decades. Choosing the best alternative may be challenging, and different forms of
partnership can necessitate different trade-offs.

Selecting a Partner: Before they vote to join forces, potential allies should consider a few
fundamental issues. First and foremost, it is important to choose a business partner who shares your
ambition as well as your priorities and objectives. Mutual confidence between partners, as well as
mutual recognition of each other's strengths and weaknesses, is often required as a basis for every
business partnership.

Collaboration Mode: The tradeoffs between various modes of growth include tempo, expense,
power, the ability to use existing competencies, the ability to create new competencies, and the
ability to access the competencies of other companies.

Governance Structure: When two companies plan to partner, governance structure and corporate
values are critical factors to remember. Alliance bonds, equity participation, and relational control
are the three major forms of government structures. The best governance system relies heavily on
the form of cooperation and collaborative priorities. Governance's job is to uphold members agreed-
upon responsibilities.
