HCF & LCM

1. Factors & Multiples
If a number M is exactly divisible by another number f, then ‘f’ is the factor of M and M is the multiple of f.
Example: 5 divides 35 exactly. Here 5 is a factor of 35 and 35 is the multiple of 5. Similarly, 2, 3, 4, 6 are all factors of 12
and 12 is their multiple.
2. Highest Common Factor (HCF)
HCF of two or more number is the greatest number which divides each of them exactly. HCF of two or more numbers can
be found out by two methods, namely:
 Prime factorization
 Long division Work Out: Find the HCF of 72, 60, 96 (12)
3. Least Common Multiple (LCM)
LCM is the least (non zero) number which is the common multiple of two or more numbers.
Example:
Multiple of 6 = 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48………………. Work Out: Find the LCM of 36, 48, 64, 72 (576)
Multiple of 8 = 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48 ………………..
Common multiple of 6 & 8 = 24, 48, ……
Least common multiple of 6 & 8 = 24
LCM of two or more numbers can be found out easily by prime divisors methods.
4. Difference between HCF & LCM
HCF of x, y, z LCM of x, y, z
Highest number which can evenly divide x, x y, and z. Least number which is exactly divisible by x, y, and z.
5. Coprime: No common factors other than 1. 6. Product of two numbers = HCF × LCM

leaving reminders a, b and c respectively.
3 Find the greatest number that will divide x, y and z Find HCF of (x – y), (y – z) and (z – x).
leaving the same reminder in each case.
4 Find the n-digit
digit greatest number which when divided (a) First find the LCM of x, y and z. Then divide the n n-digit
by x, y and z greatest number by the LCM and find the remainder, R.
(a) Leaves no remainder Required number = n-digitdigit greatest number – R.
(b) Leaves remainder K in each case
