1.0 Introduction

Business functions refer to processes and operations carried out routinely aiming at

reaching a set objective or mission. Business functions are responsible for performing various

activities that lead to the well being of the business and enhances mission attainment (Van

Noordwyk and Van Tonder, 2012). This paper is dedicated to outlining the importance of

different business functions and how advantageous they are when linked and also demonstrating

academic skills of evidence-based writing and Harvard referencing basing the argument on Tesco

PLC.

2.0 Business functions and their importance

According to Brown (2008, p59), business functions serve the role of ensuring the proper

functioning of an organization through outlining processes and operations that must be carried

out to achieve the objectives of the business, a term referred to as business processes. These

2.1 Human resource function

Human resource is responsible for ensuring that the value of Tesco company remains high

through human skills. This is applied through ensuring proper recruitment procedures and

ensuring that the company adheres to the employment laws and any other laws that outline

employment procedures and worker's protection.

2.2 Sales and Marketing function

Sales and marketing in Tesco PLC create an environment where the products of the organization

reach the needs of the consumers. This function, therefore, outlays a way through which

producers and consumers are brought together and transfer of ownership takes place.

2.3 Accounting and Finance

The accounting and finance function is responsible for ensuring that all the accounting tools

necessary to formulate a procedure are well laid down in cases such as calculation of tax liability

and that proper investment decisions, financial decisions, and dividend decisions are laid out in

Tesco PLC (Thompson, 2009).

2.4 Production and operations

This function is responsible for ensuring that production is specified in quantities, the product

production meets the deadline and the schedule and finally, the product meets the requirement.

Additionally, the production must be efficient and thus reduce the costs of operations. This is

Research and development function ensures that proper innovations that enhance the products

are instilled to ensure that the products are not out marketed. This also ensures that there is

product diversification.

3.0 The importance of linking business functions

One of the importance of linking business functions is that it reduces costs and on the other hand

improving efficiency. For example, it would be costly maintaining five functions instead of one (Zinkhan

and Shields, 1992, p. 125). O’Neill (2018, p.3) argues that through linking buTesco PLC business

functions, it ensures that setbacks are easily solved which enhances overall efficiency.

3.0 Conclusion

Business functions are the major enhancers in an organization and no business can operate

without them. This paper was dedicated to outlining various business functions and their

importance and how advantageous they have been to Tesco Plc.
