Page 21 Introduction
The RX400 is a high quality radio link or rebroadcast receiver suitable for supplying
programme feeds to transmitters and for remote broadcasts. For STL use it can
receive a stereo composite/multiplex signal generated at the studio (link transmitter)
end or from another broadcast transmitter, requiring no additional equipment for
stereo at the main transmitter site. Similarly RDS and other SCA equipment can be
connected at the studio end.
Electronically balanced and de-emphasised stereo outputs and unbalanced
composite/multiplex outputs are provided as standard. A headphone monitor and
signal strength/audio level meter are included. A stereo decoder is provided in all
versions of the RX400, which can be disabled using a rear panel switch. Up to four
channels can be selected from a front panel switch or extemal control. The level at
which the RX400's muting system operates is easily previewed and set from the
front panel meter and controls.
With remote switching, a main transmitter or other equipment can be remotely
controlled from the studio. The internal stereo decoder provides changeover relay
contacts for stereo and received signal (receiver mute) indication. A loop facility for
the composite/multiplex signal allows a backup source to be connected.
Versions with differing IF bandwidths are available, covering wideband for stereo,
narrow for high quality mono and very narrow for talkback applications. The IF
bandwidth can be tailored to meet specific requirements, for example to achieve
better adjacent channel performance.
The RX400 receiver is available in the following frequency bands:-
RX400/50 48 to SSMHz
RX400/RBRX 66 to 108MHz
RXx400/400 300 to 520MHz
RX400/800 800 to 960MHz
Other frequencies may be available to special order. The operating frequency of
each receiver is stated on the label or in the case of multi-channel units on a printed
sheet.
The receiver can be used in a standby configuration. A standby change over relay
together with a standby input are installed. This relay is energized when the power
supply in the receiver is operating and the mute is not operating, ie in normal
operation. In the energised condition the output of the receiver is connected to the
composite/multiplex output. If the relay is de-energised by either the power supply
failing or the mute operating because of poor signal then the standby input is
connected to the multiplexicomposite output. If a second receiver is connected to
the standby input a *hot standby” system is formed. Further receivers or even a
locally generated composite/multiplex source may be connected in “daisy-chain”
fashion if required.

Page 75 Installation
The sbs RX 400 is designed for simple installation. All cables, particularly those carrying
RF signals should be of high quality. Terminations should be secure and where they
have to be made always follow the instructions supplied with the individual connector.
Consideration should be given to the safety of the installation, in particular to the mains
wiring. Attention is drawn to wamings in this manual relating to electrical safety. Where
possible, antenna down leads should be grounded to a safety earth via an adequately
rated ground plate.
Before installing the receiver in an equipment rack, ensure that the stereo ON/OFF
switch on the rear panel is correctly set. Unless it is specifically required that the
receiver operates is stereo mode, it should be set to OFF. The receiver will normally
be supplied with the correct de-emphasis time constant for the country of use. This
can be changed if necessary using internal solder links. If solder links S1 and S3
are bridged with solder, the de-emphasis time constant will be 75uS. If they are
clear the time constant will be 50uS. The original setting will normally be marked on
the paperwork that accompanies the RX400,
When the RX400 has been installed and correctly connected, check that the
POWER LED is illuminated. Tum the channel select control to the required channel
or select it from the rear panel control socket (not necessary for single channel
rebroadcast receivers). The appropriate channel LED should illuminate.
Switching the meter select switch to SIGNAL will cause the meter to show the
received signal level
Mute level setting
If itis required to adjust this setting without disturbing the receiver output, set the
MUTE switch to OFF. Switch the meter to show SIGNAL. Press and hold in the
MUTE LEVEL push button using a pen or small blunt tool. The level at which the
receiver will mute is now shown on the meter. This level can be adjusted using the
front panel MUTE LEVEL control. Allow a reasonable margin for the received signal
to vary. For example, if the received signal level gives a reading of 8 on the meter, a
mute level of about 6 may be appropriate. Finally, set the MUTE switch back to
AUTO.
COMPOSITE/MULTIPLEX Output level
This level is normally set by the factory to give an output of +8dBU for an input
signal modulated with 1kHz and a total deviation of 75kHz unless a different value is
requested by the customer.
This level is easy to adjust with appropriate test equipment. Connect a test signal
modulated as required. Adjust the multi turn MPX level control to give the required
audio level.
Page 8LEFT/RIGHT Output level
The left/right output levels can be adjusted in a similar way to the multiplex output
level. However, a test frequency no higher than 400Hz should be used because of
the action of de-emphasis. It is not necessary to use a stereo signal.

The diagram below shows how a pair of RX400 receivers can be connected to
provide a hot standby configuration. A pair of antennas could be used instead of a
splitter. It is possible to connect several receivers together is required and also an
alternative source for the composite/MPX signal.
For further protection, a sbs Guardian unit could be used to detect failure of the
composite/MPX source. Contact our sales department for more information,

Receiver Front End
This is the rf unit that takes the signal from the antenna, amplifies it and down-
converts to the first intermediate frequency of 68.7MHz (or 10.7MHz for 108MHz and
below input frequency).
There are two versions of this module, depending on the receiver frequency used
The low band version (RX400LBIP) covers frequencies between 108 and 350MHz
and the high band version (RX400RFIP) frequencies between 350 and 960MHz.
High band receiver front end
The input RF signal from J1 is filtered and amplified by F1, U4,F2,US and F3. All the
filters are 50 Ohm helical types.
The signal is then mixed with the local oscillator in DBM1, a double balanced diode
ring mixer. The output of DBM1 contains the 68.7MHz IF which is connected to the
module output. The combination of R34 and associated capacitors near to the
antenna input provide the means of phantom powering a pre-amplifier via J3 pin 8 if
required. This is ultimately connected to the RX400 receiver rear panel control
socket
All UHF amplification is performed using ERA-2 gallium arsenide MMIC amplifiers.
The local oscillator uses up to four identical crystal oscillators with individual channel
crystals. The crystal frequency is calculated as follows:
RX400/400 350 to 520MHz (Signal frequency - 68.7MHz) / 6
RX400/800 800 to 960MHz —_ (Signal frequency - 68.7MHz) / 9
The crystals, in HC49/U cases operate in 5th overtone mode and are in series
resonance. The individual oscillators are selected by applying voltage to the dual
gate FET second gate. When not selected they are biased off from the negative
supply. The exact frequency may be trimmed with the associated inductors. L1,2,3
and 5. The crystal oscillator is buffered by Q1 and the frequency multiplied by three
in Q3. The required frequency is selected by the band pass filter containing L4 and
L6. This frequency is amplified by U1 and multiplied by three again by Q6. The final
local oscillator frequency is filtered and amplified by F5, U6, F4 and U3. Local
oscillator output power is between +10dbm and +13dbm.
Note that for different frequency bands some components are different as shown by
the table on the circuit diagram
Overall conversion gain is approximately 134B.
Page 16Low band (108-350MHz) receiver front end
The input RF signal from JJ is filtered by L5/L6 and associated capacitors. C42 and
L7 provide image rejection if required. The signal is amplified by U2.
The signal is then mixed with the local oscillator in DBM1, a double balanced diode
ring mixer. The output of DBM1 contains the 68.7MHz or 10,7MHz IF which is
connected to the module output. The combination of R35 and associated capacitors
near to the antenna input provide the means of phantom powering a pre-amplifier
via J2 pin 8 if required. This is ultimately connected to the RX400 receiver rear
panel control socket.
All VHF amplification is performed using ERA-2 gallium arsenide MMIC amplifiers.
The local oscillator uses up to four identical crystal oscillators with individual channel
crystals. The crystal frequency is calculated as follows:
Rx400/300 300-350MHz (Signal frequency - 68.7MHz) / 3
The crystals, in HC49/U cases operate in Sth overtone mode and are in series.
resonance. The individual oscillators are selected by applying voltage to the dual
gate FET second gate. When not selected they are biased off from the negative
supply. The exact frequency may be trimmed with the associated inductors. L1,3,4
and 11. The crystal oscillator is buffered by Q2 and the frequency multiplied by three
if required in Q1. The required frequency is selected by the band pass filter
containing L2 and L10. This frequency is amplified by U3. The final local oscillator
frequency is filtered by L8/L9 with associated capacitors and amplified U1. Local
oscillator output power is between +10dbm and +13dbm
Note that for different frequency bands some components are different as shown by
the table on the circuit diagram.
Overall conversion gain is approximately 12
