Investigating Economic Impacts of

COVID-19 on Industries, Racial

Groups, and Genders Through
Unemployment and Wage Gaps
Asmi, Reshmi

1
2
Problem/Purpose
▷ COVID-19 has had extremely adverse economic effects
▷ Unemployment shares many ties with wage gaps,
including links to gender and race
▷ Consolidated resources relating unemployment and
wage gaps are not widely available
▷ Wanted to identify and analyze industries hit the
hardest, target analyses for women and minority groups

3
Variables
▷ Input:
○ Industry unemployment rates, racial/gender
unemployment rates, median hourly pay by industry
and by race/gender
▷ Output:
○ Most-affected industries, percent compositions of
industries
○ Conclusions about the vulnerability of particular
demographics to the economic shutdown
4
Methods
▷ Unemployment data about industries, races, and gender
from bls.gov
○ Unemployment rates, racial/gender breakdowns of
employment, industry stats, population demographics
▷ For wage gap, used .csv files and from epi.org
○ Tracked the gender gap, black-white gap, and
hispanic-white gap from 1973+, median hourly pay
▷ Conducted thorough analysis as shown on website

8
Conclusions
▷ Industries impacted the most were Leisure and
Hospitality, Retail Trade, and Education and Health Services
○ What does this (and the converse) say about
Americans?
▷ Correlations between unemployment and pay
▷ Can’t make very specific conclusions, but women and
Hispanics seem to be severely impacted
▷ COVID-19 has deeply scarred unemployment and will
affect the wage gap as well
9
Anecdotes/Reflections
▷ What went well?
○ Successfully identified most-impacted industries
▷ What could we improve?
○ Making more specific conclusions about races and
genders
▷ Really enjoyed building an end-to-end product, gaining
web development skills

10
Future Work
▷ Retrieve more granular data of the breakdown different
races in industries/wages
▷ Include more races in the study
▷ Open external links in new tabs
▷ Host on Heroku

SlidesCarnival icons are editable shapes.

This means that you can:

● Change fill color and opacity.
● Change line color, width and style.

Isn’t that nice? :)
