Experiment No.3

Wavelength & Standing wave Measurements

Objectives:

Measuring the wave length, phase velocity and SWR with three different endings:
Shorting Plate – Terminator – Open End.

Equipment:
- Power supply - Shorting plate
- Gunn Oscillator - Terminator
- Slotted line - Oscilloscope

Tasks:

Note: the theory, procedure, and connections are cleared in the companion Worksheet of the
experiment.

The equations used for calculating :

VSWR: ………………………………………

Wavelength : ………………………………………

Velocity : ……………………………………...

In our experiments, the band we use called : ……………………………………...

The Gunn Oscillator fixed on F = ………………………………...

Experimental Work
Draw the Block Diagram for all connections bellow
Microwave lab ( EE484 ( Eng. Nagla Buzghaia

• Set up the equipment as shown in the block diagram you have drawn above.
• Terminate the slotted line with the given loads i.e “Short circuited”, “Open
circuited” and “matched Load”.
• Move the slider (probe of slotted line) along the slotted line. Record the probe
positions (locate the position of Vmin and Vmax).
• Continue moving the slider to obtain a second Vmin and Vmax and record the
probe positions again.
• Obtain the distance between the two measures (Vmin2-Vmin1) and determine λg
VSWR, and ν

1) Shorting Plate :

Vmin Lmin Vmax Lmax VSWR λg ν

• Compare the results with the theoretical expected values.
