Resolution of Forces

Steps to calculate Reactions

1. Convert any UDL (uniform distributed load) to (P) point load = wl. P is center of UDL
2. Convert any UVL (uniform varying load) to point load = ½ base (l) x h (w/m). P is 1/3
distance from thick portion of UVL

Steps to calculate Shear Force SF

1. Analyse shear from left side of beam. Up force is positive. Down force is Negative.
2. Connect points on beam using the following rules
Point load acting = straight line
UDL load acting = incline line
UVL load acting = parabolic line
No load acting = straight line

Steps to calculate Bending Moment BM

Moment @ Rl (reactions) = clockwise moments = anti-clockwise moments. Also, ∑Moments

=0
Moment = force x distance
Analyse moments from left side support by placing your tumb on support and finger on
force to determine whether clockwise (+) or anti-clockise (-)

1. Start at first point on the left end of the beam. Always = 0, MA = 0

2. Hide first section to the right with thumb and calculate moment to the left.
3. Hide next section to right and add the previous moments
4. Continue this to the end of the beam. Note that the moment at right end is also = 0

Point load acting = incline line

UDL load acting = parabolic line
UVL load acting = cubic line
