DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
Academic Goals
The graduate program in the Department of Psychology strives to prepare students with skills
for advanced research and expert knowledge in their areas of specialization, which will
contribute to the ultimate goal of psychology, to understand human mind and behavior.
Emphasis is placed on training professionals in both research and clinical application.
Laboratory-based education focuses on training of specialized theories and methodology
relevant to research and teaching. Project-based training is also implemented to develop
students’ competence in real-life problem solving and applied practice.
Fields of Study
Degree Requirements
1. Master’s Program
1) A student in the master’s program must obtain a total of 24 credits in courses on research
methodology and in their chosen research area. Credits earned from other departments
can be used to fill this requirement, only under the discretion of the student’s advisor or
the graduate program director.
2) Students decide advisor designated courses in psychology with the academic advisor’s
discretion at the first semester. “Advisor designated courses” are mandatory extra credits
which are not included in the total credits required for the degree. Students must submit a
“Advisor designated courses” form by the discretion of the academic advisor. The courses
can be designated up to five courses and non-psychology majors should take at least two
undergraduate courses in psychology.
3) If any of these requirements should change during the course of the student’s term,
he/she can choose between the old and the revised requirements, when authorized by the
graduate program director.
4) Credits earned from other departments can be approved only under the discretion of the
student’s advisor.

5) A student in the master’s program can take the doctoral courses only under the discretion
of the student’s advisor.
2. Doctoral Program
1) Students in the doctoral program must obtain a total of 36 credits. Among those 36
credits, 18 credits must come from their areas of specialization. Credits earned from other
departments can be used to fill this requirement, only under the discretion of the student’s
advisor or the graduate program director.
2) Students in the doctoral program must publish at least two research articles in professional
journals, as a first or corresponding author for at least one article, which should be approved
by the dissertation committee before submitting their doctoral dissertation.
3) The students with a master degree in non-psychology majors in the doctoral program
should meet the prerequisites of the master’s students with an undergraduate degree in
non-psychology majors.
4) If any of these requirements should change during the course of the student’s term,
he/she can choose between the old and the revised requirements, when authorized by the
graduate program director.
5) Credits earned from other departments can be approved only under the discretion of the
student’s advisor.
6) A doctoral student can take the master’s courses only under the discretion of the student’s
advisor.
3. The program for students admitted into the doctoral program without a master’s degree
1) Students admitted into the doctoral program without a master’s degree must take a total
of 54 credit hours. Credit hours earned from other departments must be approved by the
academic advisor or the graduate program director. to be considered as the partial
fulfillment of the requirements.
2) The graduation requirements for students admitted into the doctoral program without a
master’s degree are not different from those for the doctoral students. “Advisor designated
courses” for these students are not different from those of master’s students.
3) Students in the master’s program may transfer to the doctoral program without a master’s
degree if approved by the graduate program director.
4) Students accepted into the doctoral program without a master’s degree are not required to
submit a masters’ thesis prior to continuing work towards a doctoral degree. If students
decide not to pursue a doctoral degree, a master’s degree may be awarded only to those
students who have satisfied the requirements for the master’s program and have
successfully defended their master’s theses.

Comprehensive Examinations
1. Master’s Program: The comprehensive examination for the master’s students is composed of
two subjects in specialty areas below. (100 points each)
2. Doctoral Program : The formats of the comprehensive examination for the doctoral students
are as follows.
1) The student’s academic advisor can organize the evaluation committee (minimum of two
faculty members including the academic advisor) after four academic semesters since the
admission of the student. The comprehensive examinations must include a written test
and an oral test of which format may be decided by the evaluation committee. Upon
completion of the examination, the academic advisor must complete and an evaluation
form which contains the titles and dates of the oral and written test, summary of the
evaluation and the final grade. This policy is effective for students who are admitted in
the spring semester of 2014 or later. Students who have entered the program prior to the
spring semester of 2014 may choose between the current format and the format specified
in the graduate school bulletin effective at the time of their admission, after attaining
permission from the graduate program director
2) Doctoral students in Clinical and Counseling Psychology Program can choose between the
common format(rule 1)) and a paper-and-pencil test in the following subject areas:
Advanced Psychodiagnosis, Advanced Psychopathology, Advanced Psychotherapy,
Advanced Personality Psychology
