A to B : When a seed first begins to germinate, it increases in mass. This


is because it absorbs water from the soil. As soon as it begins to grow, it
starts to use its food stores.
B to C : After a few days, the plumule of the seed grows above the
surface of the ground. The first leaves open out and begin to
photosynthesise. The plant can now make its own food faster than it is
using it up. It begins to increase in mass.
C to D : Once there is sufficient water, the enzymes in the cotyledons
become active. Amylase begins to break down the stored starch
molecules to maltose. Proteases break down the protein molecules to
amino acids.
D to E : Maltose and amino acids are soluble, so they dissolve in the
water. They diffuse to the embryo plant, which uses these foods for
growth. The amino acids are used to make new protein molecules for
cell membranes and cytoplasm. Some of the stored sugar is made into
cellulose, to make cell walls for new cells.
E to F : All this requires energy. The seed, like all living organisms, gets
its energy by breaking down glucose, in respiration. Quite a lot of the
glucose from the stored starch is used up in respiration, so the seed
loses weight.

Overall explanation
After the seeds germinate, seeds will be formed which are equipped with stem
