Gettin’ Jiggly Wit It -

Soporific Songstress Monster Hat (Ver 1.0)

Materials:

 2x 50g balls Patons Cotton Blend 8-ply in pink


 Small amounts of 8 -ply acrylic yarn in aqua, white and black
 Small amount polyester fibrefill
 4.0mm circular knitting needle
 4.0mm crochet hook
 Wool needle

Pattern notes:

 This pattern is resizable; increase or decrease in multiples of 6 sts.


 Tension: 22 st x 30 rows per 10cm square; if using different yarn, use the gauge
recommended by your yarn manufacturer.

 Stitches used: K, K2tog, Kfb, dc, slst, magic ring, whip stitch, long stitch
 Where indicated, use the invisible fasten off to ensure the edge is neat.

A) Body

Using pink yarn, cast on 108 st.

Working in the round, continue in stockinette stitch until work measures approximately 15cm
from cast on edge.

Crown shaping:

Round 1: * K2tog, K16 ** repeat until end of round


Round 2: K to end
Round 3: * K2tog, K15 ** repeat until end of round
Round 4: K to end

Continue in this manner, decreasing 6 st every alternate round, until 24 st remain.

Forelock shaping:

Rounds 1-8: K to end (24 st)


Round 9: * K7, Kfb ** repeat * ** to end of round (27 st)
Round 10: K to end (27 st)
Round 11: K4, * Kfb, K8 ** repeat * ** to end of round (30 st)
Round 10: K to end (30 st)
Round 12: * K9, Kfb ** repeat * ** to end of round (33 st)
Round 13: K to end (33 st)
Round 14: K5, * Kfb, K10 ** repeat * ** to end of round (36 st)

Break yarn and leave end long for sewing up. Using a wool needle, run the yarn through
remaining stitches and pull tight.

Finishing:

Lightly stuff forelock portion of the hat using polyester fibrefill. Run a length of matching yam
through Round 1 of forelock portion on the wrong side of the fabric and pull tight to close the
top of the hat. Curl the tip of the forelock and sew in place, shaping by hand. Fold forelock
over front of hat and sew on securely.

Fold 3cm of the brim and hem to the wrong side of the fabric using whip stitch.

B) Ears (make 2)

Piece A:

Using pink yarn, cast on 40st

Rounds 1-2: Working in the round, K to end


Round 3: * K8, K2tog ** repeat * ** to end of round (36 st)
Round 4: K to end (32 st)
Round 5: * K7, K2tog ** repeat * ** to end of round (32 st)
Round 6: K to end (32 st)
Round 7: * K6, K2tog ** repeat * ** to end of round (28 st)
Round 8: K to end (28 st)
Round 9: * K5, K2tog ** repeat * ** to end of round (24 st)
Round 10: K to end (24 st)
Round 11: * K4, K2tog ** repeat * ** to end of round (20 st)
Round 12: K to end (20 st)
Round 13: * K3, K2tog ** repeat * ** to end of round (16 st)
Round 14: K to end (16 st)
Round 15: * K2, K2tog ** repeat * ** to end of round (12 st)

Break yarn and leave end long for sewing up. Using a wool needle, run the yarn through
remaining stitches and pull tight.

Piece B:

Using black yarn, cast on 14 st, turn

Row 1: P to end (14 st), turn


Row 2: K5, K2tog, K5, K2tog (12 st), turn
Row 3: P to end (12 st), turn
Row 4: K4, K2tog, K4, K2tog (10 st), turn
Row 5: P to end (10 st), turn
Row 6: K3, K2tog, K3, K2tog (8 st), turn
Row 7: P to end (8 st), turn
Row 8: K2, K2tog, K2, K2tog (6 st), turn
Row 9: P to end (6 st), turn
Row 10: K, K2tog, K, K2tog (4 st)

Break yarn and leave end long for sewing up. Using a wool needle, run the yarn through
remaining loops from first stitch of Row 10, pull tight.

Assembly:

Lay Piece B over the middle of Piece A with cast on edges matching. Sew Piece B onto
Piece A using hemming stitches.

C) Eyes (make 2)

Piece A:

Use aqua yarn (and scrap yarn to mark start of round)

Start with 6-dc magic ring, working in the round


Round 1: 2 dc in same st until end of round
Round 2: * dc, 2 dc in same st **, repeat * to ** to end of round
Round 3: * 2 dc in same st, 2 sc **, repeat * to ** to end of round, 2 sc, 2 slst, break off
yarn and use invisible fasten off.

Change to white yarn, join at invisible fasten off point.

Round 4: Ch 1, dc, * 2 dc in same st, 3 dc **, repeat * to ** to end of round, slst into
starting ch

Break off yarn, leave end long for sewing up and use invisible fasten off.

Piece B:

Make 6-dc magic ring, use invisible fasten off, leave end of yarn long and sew near edge
of pupil on Piece A.

Putting it together:

Sew eyes and ears to hat as shown in top image. Use long stitch to loosely embroider
mouth. Weave in all ends.
